Minecraft RTS spin-off might be in the works, hints latest rumors

The game might be announced very soon!

According to Jeff Gerstmann, it seems like Microsoft is currently working on a new Minecraft spinoff, this time in the real-time strategy (RTS) genre. Jeff Gerstmann, one of the co-founders of Giant Bomb (a well-known gaming website) and a former GameSpot editor said this during one of his Twitch streams

No official announcement from Microsoft or Mojang about the Minecraft RTS spin-off yet

Although neither Microsoft nor Mojang Studios have hinted at any project like this yet, it seems like Gerstmann has actually seen screenshots of the game in its current form and even claimed that we should be hearing something about it this week or very soon. The game is apparently under a codename right now and it’s a story-driven title complete with cut screens and all that other fun stuff as players will have control over units that resemble the iconic character of Steve.

This isn’t the first time that there have been rumors about such a project though and a developer came up with a project that reimagined Minecraft as an RTS game for his application to Mojang as pointed out by Jeff (the developer ended up getting the job).

Now it’s hard to be completely sure of what Microsoft and Mojang are planning. Minecraft spinoffs like Minecraft Dungeon and Minecraft Earth (which were shut down a while ago) do exist and the RTS genre isn’t completely off the table.

Jeff Gerstmann is also a pretty reliable source and the game could be announced during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase scheduled for June 12 or the Xbox Games Showcase Extended set to go live on the 14th of June. Till then, all players can do is speculate.
