Niantic plans to shut down Harry Potter: Wizards Unite by early 2022

The game will see its end in January 2022

The strategy to follow a similar concept caused the game to be scrapped as Pokémon GO developer Niantic announced the shut down of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in early 2022. The location-based RPG will turn off the game servers and all the additional services including the community forum and all associated social media channels on January 31, 2022. The game will be removed from App Store, Google Play, and Galaxy Store on December 6. Players will be no longer able to make in-game purchases from the same day.

Reasons behind the shut down of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Niantic made the announcement in a blog post on their website. The company didn’t disclose anything on why they decided to end the game. But the huge gap in popularity with the company’s other existing titles, especially Pokémon Go, clearly seems to be a primary reason.

The game won’t refund any previous purchases made in the game. Instead, the game will bring major gameplay changes that will take effect on November 2, 2021. And, several events will be coming for the next months.

Not all games are meant to last forever. Our goal with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was to bring the magic of the wizarding world to life for millions of players as they stepped outside and explored their neighborhoods. We accomplished that together, delivering a two-year narrative story arc that will soon complete

Niantic has several upcoming games in their pipeline

AR titles are going to keep coming from Niantic. The company launched its new title Pikmin Bloom a few days ago. The developer is currently working on Transformers: Heavy Metal, where players are able to battle giant robots in AR. Besides, nine games are in the development pipeline of Niantic and some of which will go into soft launch in 2022. The apps will “bring players to life in new and unique ways”.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic and WB Games San Francisco, and published by Niantic, under license from Portkey Games. The game was released in June 2019.
