Pokémon Unite leaks suggest addition of a new Auto-Chess mode in the game’s Chinese server

Could a global release be on the cards?

Pokémon Unite, the Pokémon Company’s MOBA title for the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, may soon introduce a new mode that brings a fresh twist to the game. Leaks reveal that an auto-chess mode, similar to Mobile LegendsMagic Chess, and League of Legend‘s TFT is in development. However, the catch is that this Auto Chess mode might initially only be exclusive to the Pokémon Unite Chinese server.

The Auto Chess mode is still in its early days of development

Promotional artwork shared by ElChicoEevee on X (formerly Twitter) reveals a chessboard-style grid as showcased in a Bilibili video, where Pokémon will battle autonomously, a hallmark of the auto-battler genre. Using this game mechanic, players draft and deploy Pokémon, allowing the in-game mechanics to win against the opponent for them.

Auto Chess mode has rapidly gained popularity, and Pokemon Unite might breathe new life into this title for casual gamers and experienced players alike. There’s so much to be excited about, though. However, one has to tread carefully with the information given. Do note that the leak on Bilibili was not confirmed by the devs themselves and hence the mode could be still in early development stage.

Possible Features coming with the Auto Chess Mode

The auto-chess mode may introduce some other strategy elements into Pokémon Unite. Some of its features may include the following:

  • Rewards and Rankings: It would be similar to how the other modes of Pokémon Unite might work, like providing ranked matches with additional rewards, like Holowear or other cosmetics, for competitive players.
  • Pokémon Draft System: You may construct your teams by randomly selecting a Pokémon from an available list, where their choice might affect the synergy level of your team. Some synergy bonuses may come across in Auto-battlers, including when you pair Pokémon by type or by role.
  • Upgradeable Units: This is because, in a potential Pokémon leveling up, combining the same characters will have a merger and increase in the strength and abilities of characters. For instance, when three Pikachus unite, a stronger Pikachu comes with more power.
  • Options for Battle Strategy: You may use the strategy to place your Pokémon on a grid-based battlefield, thus impacting how they are going to clash with others. Ranged Pokémon do well at the back, whereas bulky Pokémon defend the frontline.
  • Unique Power-Ups and Items: You would be able to equip Pokémon with items encountered in rounds, like the boosting tool for damage or items for health regeneration. This can be crucial for a turnaround in battles.
  • Seasonal Rotations and Limited-Time Content: This mode could feature exclusive Pokémon or items that rotate seasonally, motivating players to change their strategies and continue playing the game periodically.

When will the Auto Chess mode release in Pokémon Unite

Speculation claims that this mode may be officially announced on Pokémon Day, February 27, 2025, when major Pokémon updates are usually introduced. Until then, fans can only hope that it will be an early surprise, and there is no concrete timeline for its rollout.

If it were to be released globally, the auto-chess mode would add much diversity to the gameplay of Pokémon Unite. Given its large cast of playable Pokémon, each with its unique abilities, the game is very well-suited for this genre. It attracts new gamers and deepens engagement among existing players, with creative team compositions and strategies.

Players can only guess at present as to how this mode might be shaping the future of Pokémon Unite. Whether it is fresh excitement or a discarded experiment, one thing is sure: Pokémon Unite keeps evolving, leaving fans on their toes for what’s next.
