Yesterday, and out of the blue, Square Enix launched a Twitter page for Project Xehanort. This new project calls itself “a new mobile experience for Kingdom Hearts”, the possibilities are endless. Aimed to release in Spring 2020, fans of the series have some time to discuss.
The announcement came with a mysterious “Guess the Name Campaign”, where fans can guess the name of this new project. Apparently, there will be 10 winners once the campaign ends in 1/28 at 6:59 p.m. PT.
You can find more information on the official page.
What could Project Xehanort be?
At this point in time, it’s impossible to determine what Project Xehanort might end up. Having it deliberately called an “experience” and not a game, however, makes everything point towards it not resulting in one.
Square Enix has a tendency to unveil Kingdom Heart’s story in unconventional manners. An example of this is the two-hour-long movie that’s available in Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which explains the story of the mobile game Kingdom Hearts Union X (Cross). This could be somewhat of a hint, as Project Xehanort may end up resulting in an interactive way to tell a story, and not a game.
Having pointed the mobile game, however, it’s worth noticing some fan theories, as most Kingdom Hearts Union X believe this is a way to transition from one mobile game to a new one. This theory holds up if we take into account how long the actual game has been running and its gradual decrease in popularity over the years, which may have led Square Enix and SENA to take it in another direction.
We’ll, however, know the official name in a few days, something that will definitely clear some things up.
