Roblox data leak release personal information of almost 4,000 developers

All the attendees of the Roblox Developer Conference between 2017-2020 are affected

Online gaming platform Roblox has faced a major data breach that has released almost 4,000 developers’ personal information. The leak includes personal information such as email addresses, names, usernames, dates of birth, phone numbers, physical and IP addresses, and even clothing sizes of the sufferers. This unwanted occurrence has put Roblox in an uncomfortable situation and the company’s data security is put under question. Attendees of the Roblox Developer Conference between 2017-2020 became the victims of the Roblox data leak.

Roblox data leak affected several attendees of the RDC between 2017-2020

As reported by PC Gamer, a spokesperson from Roblox said, ā€œRoblox is aware of a third-party security issue where there were indications of unauthorized access to limited personal information of a subset of our creator community.ā€ The Roblox security team launched an investigation with the aid of independent experts to support the victims. ā€œWe will continue to be vigilant in monitoring and vetting the cyber security posture of Roblox and our third-party vendors,” the person added.

According to haveibeenpwned, the original data breach took place on the 18th of December 2020 and it was available to HIBP on the 18th of July. The affected persons are invitees and attendees of the annual Roblox Developer Conference (RDC) between 2017-2020. In a Twitter post by Troy Hunt, the creator of haveibeenpwned, he said that he had received emails from several affected persons. One of the victims claimed to be contacted via WhatsApp by some Turkish person. Other high-profile users have started receiving calls, texts, and emails already. So far, this matter seems to go beyond online.

The incident could lead to potential lawsuits

Roblox Corporation has been well aware of the data leak. However, the company did not disclose the matter in public and neither contacted the affected, which is unlawful in California where the Roblox Corporation headquarters is located. As of now, Roblox has reportedly contacted the affected personnel. The minimally affected users got an apology from the company, while the seriously affected users got a year of identity protection.

As the leak could seriously affect the sufferers through potential identity theft and scams, Roblox may not escape future lawsuits. Negligence from the company has already made its data security questionable. We look forward to gathering more information on this incident and following the incident closely will let people know if something has come up.
