Tencent removes hit title Dungeon and Fighter Mobile from some Android app stores as a sign of a licensing dispute

The game has been removed from some Chinese Android platforms!

Dungeon and Fighter Mobile, the hit actionRPG title from Tencent will not be available on the app stores of Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo owing to a licensing dispute, as reported by 21st Century Business Herald. The licensing of these platforms expired a month before the game’s official launch and hence Tencent decided to pull back the game from the platforms as a result.

Dungeon and Fighter Mobile can still be downloaded from the official website despite not being available on major Android markets

Huawei app store accounts for 43 percent of the domestic smartphone market and is a big player in game distribution in China. This is not the first time, Tencent has had a dispute with them regarding game distribution, earlier the platform removed some of Tencent’s titles, however shortly after agreements were made and the games re-appeared on the platform.

The same can be expected this time around as the licensing agreements have expired for a couple of platforms. Tencent asked the users to download the game from the official website, as “adjustments in the cooperation with certain app stores” were being made. Hence the game might return on the platforms after the licensing issue gets resolved.

Dungeon and Fighter Mobile was initially developed by NEXON and is one of the most successful titles in the PC gaming genre. For mobile, despite having initial issues due to server glitches, the game managed to amass over 60 million player registrations across platforms, making it even the most downloaded title on the Apple Stores in China.

Tencent’s licensing issue reflects how difficult the domestic industry has become in China

The Dungeon and Fighter licensing dispute just adds up to another type of issue the publishers face in the domestic market on top of the periodic regulatory crackdown conducted by authorities.

The reason for the license dispute is not known as no party has stated the reasons, however, the users and fans will hope that it can be resolved as soon as possible.
