Microsoft is gearing up to release its highly awaited Xbox Mobile Gaming App Store, and we might have got the confirmation that this is going to be pretty soon. The official Xbox website, xbox.com, now features a page for the Xbox Mobile Gaming App Store, suggesting that it could first be available through the Xbox Insiders program, but there are doubts about the July 2024 launch as previously mentioned.
Xbox Mobile Gaming App Store web page currently displays a ‘coming soon’ message
First revealed by Klobrille on X, the Xbox Mobile Store is now displaying a “Coming soon” message. Now, in the write-up, what’s curious is that the link when you open it shows a “Thank you for participating in the Xbox Insiders program”. It seems likely that it will be available to Xbox Insiders first before its full-fledged launch.
In October 2022, Microsoft announced plans for an Xbox Games App Store on mobile, aiming to challenge Google and Apple’s dominance. Phil Spencer, who heads Xbox as the CEO, confirmed this in December last year, as he mentioned talking to other partners to establish Microsoft’s very own mobile store.
Presented as a ‘gamer first’ approach, his move aligns with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which allows tech companies to bypass Apple and Google’s fees. The 30% fee debate, highlighted by the Epic vs Apple case, adds to the relevance of Microsoft’s strategy.
From the words of Microsoft’s Xbox President Sarah Bond, she had confirmed that the store will be launching in July 2024 while speaking at the Bloomberg Tech Summit. As Bond mentioned, the plan is to initially launch the service on the web to ensure it is accessible from all devices and countries, and hence, the activation of the webpage now aligns with this strategy.
Even though the launch date isn’t set, with only two days left in July at the time of writing, I’m not sure when it will be released. I’ll need to keep an eye on the Xbox Mobile Gaming Store web page for any updates, and I suggest you should do the same.
