Sands of Salzaar review: Dive into a fantasy RPG and choose your identity

A brand new mobile game with strategy as well as story elements!

Sands of Salzaar is a brand new open-world sandbox RPG that has recently been released on mobile. And if the name of the game sounds familiar, you are probably right, because Sands of Salzaar was released as a PC game in the year 2021 prior to being developed for mobile devices as well. The game is developed by Han-Squirrel studio, hailing from China, and published by X.D. Network, a Hong Kong-based company. Read further to find a review and first impressions of the game. Here in this article, we will review Sands of Salzaar and share our first impressions of the game.

Assume the role of a hero as Salzaar gets ravaged by conflicts

Starting off with the Sands of Salzaar review, we take a look at the game’s premise and how the universe in it came to be. The player is spawned in the imaginary world of Salzaar, the namesake of the game, some twenty years after a great war that marred the landscape and affected the culture in the game. The player will be expected to get involved with a faction, if not create their own.

The game thereon takes on a gameplay that is a blend of strategy elements as well as a story which makes the game more engrossing and interesting for the players. Sands of Salzaar offers two modes for the players to enjoy based on their personal tastes. There is a Story Mode that focuses on the story and the finer elements of the game that does not involve game mechanics.

In this mode, players can lay back and relish the story without feeling the need to rush in order to complete game objectives. On the other hand, the Sandbox Mode allows the player to explore the game as it is without the story elements, it is for the more experienced players who are looking for a challenge in the game.

Salzaar comes with a story that suffices the game

Although Sands of Salzaar has a self-sufficient story mode, adhering to an unbiased review of the game, it is not out of the ordinary with a plot that does just enough to fit in with the game. While players can actively choose to focus on either the story mode or the technical and more core aspects of the game, it should be noted that the story just by itself does not really add a lot to the game.

The game starts twenty years after a great war that altered the world of the game and after the decades gone by, the land of Salzaar is once again being threatened by rogue creatures. The objective of the player is to rise above those threats and prevent another war from happening.

The story is about choice driven and the ending differs up to some extent depending on the choice you make. Therefore, a player can try and play through all the choices in order to unlock the full potential of the story.

Therefore, the game might just fall short if you are looking for a game with a gripping story that drives the gameplay, as the single-player elements are not exactly up to that task. But if you are looking for a game with decent action that comes with a storyline as a bit of a break from the chaos, then the game is yours to play.

Explore the depths of the mythical desert and conquer the exotic land

The game involves combat and fighting in an isometric view mode that is characteristic of many MOBA and strategy games such as League of Legends. In the game, the players are required to build their own troops and make an army to fight against other rogue forces in the game. Each army or player has a set of heroes who play the central role in battles while the rest of the army mostly accounts for strength in numbers and as fodder.

Sands of Salzaar might have been going for an expansive battle strategy experience when making the game owing to the large army operations that one can do in this game. But speaking from a general perspective, this move might not have worked out for the best. This is because the expansive nature of combat with so many units on the battlefield results in a lot of chaos and makes the actual battle and objective hard to follow.

Also, with so many units participating, strategizing is often useless and instead, the battle becomes a strength of numbers instead of brains, as a result, more often than not the side with more numbers on their half wins. That apart, the fighting and combat are pretty similar to the likes of LoL and other RPGs with simple enough controls that are easy to get familiar with.

Final Verdict

Overall, Sands of Salzaar is a game that feels like one of those titles that often get reviews based on the person playing it, and therefore is hard to get a unanimous opinion. The game might be a hit or miss depending on what you are looking for specifically and your expectations while playing the game. But in order to gauge that, you have to play the game first, and this is definitely a game that can be well worth your time if you get into the groove.
