FPL GW14 Differentials 2021/22: 5 Fantasy players that can help boost your rank

It's easy to pick the big players, but who are some of the lesser know potential stars of the competition!

We’re now slowly delving into the madness of the Winter Premier League. The first-midweek gameweek of the season is upon us, and there’s a lot more where that came from. Lots of games, lots of rotation, lots of drama! The weather here in the UK is not helping the case at all either, with the Spurs vs Burnley game being called off in Gameweek 13 due to heavy snow. It’s highly advised to start building for the hectic schedule now, and as usual, we’ve compiled a list of 5 differential players with under 5% ownership. These assets are risky, but highly rewarding, with each of their returns contributing greatly to your ranks. Here is a list of FPL GW14 Differentials 2021/22 that can bolster your squads ahead of gameweek 14.

FPL GW14 Differentials 2021/22

1. Łukasz Fabiański (Goalkeeper) – 5.0 million

West Ham‘s main man between the sticks has done a fine job this season but has gone under the radar. Although slightly more expensive than the usual keeper, Fabianski has been one of the best at earning save points, averaging 3.8 saves per game across the last 5 games. The Polish shot-stopper will guarantee a good few points per week and is owned by just 2.2% of FPL players as well.

Though West Ham has failed to keep a clean sheet since GW9, it is the upcoming fixtures for the side that contribute most to making Fabianski look appealing as an FPL pick. They face just 2 sides rated 4 and higher (Chelsea and Arsenal) on the fixture difficulty rating system, in the next 9 gameweeks.

Their GW14 fixture is against Brighton at home, which is comforting to hear, as West Ham are much better whilst playing at their own stadium. With the support of all their fans, the team has managed to rank 6th in the league for the lowest expected goals conceded. In comparison, they rank 15th for xGC whilst playing away from home. Brighton has struggled with creativity on their side of the situation, attempting just 52 shots and scoring just 6 goals whilst playing at home all season, ranking 17th for each of those statistics in the league.

2. Takehiro Tomiyasu (Defender) – 4.6 million

Tomiyasu finally got his first attacking return last gameweek against Newcastle, where he grabbed an assist. Combined with the clean sheet as well, the Japanese full-back recorded the first double-digit haul of his Premier League career, with 12 points including the 3 bonus points. GW13 was his 10th gameweek this season, and in that time, Tomiyasu has blanked just 4 times, in comparison to his 6 returns, which is a solid number considering the cheap starting price of 4.5 million. Overall, he has averaged 4.6 points per game, the best among all players in that price range.

Tomiyasu’s addition to the starting XI has had a remarkable impact, helping his side keep the most clean sheets with 6 and concede the 3rd least goals (8) across the last 10 gameweeks. Defending isn’t all Tomiyasu can offer either, with this attacking potential seemingly growing in recent weeks. In addition to his assist in GW13, he also ranks 3rd amongst all defenders for the most key passes (6) and the most successful crosses into the box (4) across the last 3 gameweeks.

Arsenal has an appealing list of fixtures coming up with Manchester United in GW14, followed by Everton and Southampton. United have struggled in the league, keeping just 2 clean sheets all season. Offensively, they’ve struggled to create as well, ranking joint bottom for the least shots (37) and 19th for the least shots on target (12) across the last 5 gameweeks.

3. Rayan Aït-Nouri (Defender) – 4.3 million

Aït-Nouri has been on top of his game in recent weeks and has emerged as one of the best on-form bargain defenders around. After pushing his competitor Marcal out of the way in the pecking order, the French youngster now sees himself on fine form. Ever since his first start of the season back in Gameweek 9, Ait Nouri has only blanked once in 5 matches. Overall, he has totaled 26 points in that period, averaging 5.2 points per game. Whilst playing in an advanced-wingback position, Ait Nouri has also been tasked with a few set-piece duties as well.

Over the last 4 gameweeks, he ranks 2nd for most corners taken (12), of which all of them were delivered into the penalty area. On top of that, he also ranks in the top 5 for successful crosses of 8, passes into the opposition box with 32, and 7 key passes, ever since his first season start in GW9. The Wolves’ defense has also been one to praise, ranking 4th in the league for the least shots conceded per game (11.46) and the least big chances conceded per game 1.38. Their 12 goals conceded all season is a tally bettered by just Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

Wolves will invite Burnley in gameweek 14, the kind of fixture which looks appealing on the fixture list. The Clarets have struggled to find the goal whilst playing away, ranking as the 4th worst team for expected goals. They’ve only managed an average of 3.5 shots on target per away game, and Wolves have a comfortable 30% chance at a clean sheet as well.

4. James Maddison (Midfielder) – 6.6 million

Maddison had an explosive performance in Gameweek 13, recording a huge haul of 16 points. He provided 1 goal and 2 assists to win all 3 points for Leicester City, and also helped him take all 3 bonus points as well. The recent change in tactical formation sees a fresh lineup for Leicester City, with 2 wingers, a singular striker, and Maddison in with a 3-man midfield. This has seen him perform at a much better rate compared to the start of the campaign where Brendan Rodgers opted for a 2-striker set-up.

After the injury in the first few weeks of the season, Maddison was only seen in cameos, but his recent performance may have proved his worth to the manager. Over the last 5 gameweeks, Maddison has averaged 2.16 shots on target per 90 and 0.93 big chances created per 90, which are both leading values of all midfielders in the game. His goal involvement of 57% is also the most out of any other midfielder as well.

Leicester’s opponent in GW14 will be Southampton, who just come off the back of a 4-0 thrashing to the hands of Liverpool. Following up, are Aston Villa, Newcastle, Tottenham Spurs, and Everton. Out of all 4 of those teams, only Spurs have held a strong defense in the last 5 weeks, with the other 3 ranking in the bottom half for expected goals conceded.

5. Calum Wilson (Forward) – 7.4 million

Despite not achieving a return since GW10, Wilson has been putting up some great underlying numbers, notably his performance during Gameweek 12 against Brentford. The forward ranked top for the most shots in the box that game (5) out of all FPL assets. He also had 12 touches in the opposition box during that match as well, a tally bettered by only Joshua King and Mohamed Salah. Fans will have their new manager to thank, with Eddie Howe bringing a strong attacking attitude to the dressing room.

Newcastle’s total of 23 shots and 9 on target was a table-topping number across all teams in the Premier League in Gameweek 12. The number shows drastic improvement in the style of football Newcastle is playing, as they have averaged only 10.73 shots per game prior to that gameweek – the 4th worst of all teams.

Newcastle will face Norwich at home in Gameweek 14, and the setup couldn’t be better. Norwich sits at 19th place in the league, and ranks in the bottom 5 for shots conceded (88), and also holds the worst record for shots conceded on target in the league (36) across the last 6 gameweeks. Generally, Norwich has been especially poor when playing away from home, which will be the case in GW14, as they rank rock bottom for expected goals conceded of all teams.
