Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent Beginners Guide and Tips

A journey that will give rise to the champions of the continent...

Octopath Traveler is a single-player RPG that was released in 2018 for Nintendo Switch, developed by Square Enix. Later a prequel is released on mobile, and the name is Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (Octopath Traveler: CotC). It establishes the story of Octopath Traveler and lays the foundation through which CotC players can try out the Switch game. It is a turn-based JRPG with a lot of interaction, and battle scenarios, and can add up to eight characters in a party. In this beginners guide, we will discuss in detail what Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent revolves around, what the gameplay is like, and help new players understand how it works.

Gameplay Overview

The story of Octopath Traveler: CotC takes place in the same land as Octopath Traveler, Orsterra. This time though, the story is brand-new. It takes place a few years prior to the events of Octopath Traveler. Orsterra is ruled by tyrants hungry for “wealth, power, and fame”. While the tyrants’ desires have unleashed bottomless darkness upon the world…there are those who resist the darkness. You will meet them while traveling the world as “the Chosen Ones of a divine ring”.

What will you obtain, and what will you experience through this journey? A journey that will give rise to the champions of the continent. It is a single-player campaign game, so the main focus is always on the story. Now, let’s look at what the gameplay of CotC is like.

Introducing the basics of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent

Champions of the Continent is a single-player game, just like Octopath Traveler. It revolves primarily around the players gaining control of and playing as the main character, and then recruiting other characters on their journey around Orsterra.

Primary Gameplay

The primary gameplay of CotC is a JRPG format. For those uninitiated, a JRPG is a Japanese role-playing game. It involves turn-based gameplay as its main gameplay element. Combat is also turn-based, and all JRPGs involve a large amount of interaction with the world of the game.

CotC accomplishes this through ornately animated environments, and well-crafted combat sequences. The players start with one character and adopt a point-and-click method of movement around the maps.

There are three different paths that a player can choose to follow at the start: Wealth, Fame, or Power. Each of these paths has a different boss or villain that is the antagonist of that path. The path the players choose determines their story, but they can play the other paths once they complete the story with one path.

Starting with the Tutorial

When the game starts, the players have to go through a tutorial that explains the basics of the game. Movement, combat, and interaction, it is all shown in the tutorial. After that is completed, the players will see a Cat Master occasionally, who will guide them through the various stages of the game. Any time a new phenomenon is introduced to the player, this cute little cat will explain everything in an easy-to-understand language. It is recommended to read through these panels, as they are very helpful.

Introducing the in-game Characters

In Octopath Traveler CotC, players can control up to eight different characters at the same time. That is no easy task. And with so many members, combat becomes more challenging to manage. Each character has different Jobs in the game. These Jobs are nothing but character classes. You can check our Octopath Traveler CotC tier list for in-depth details. And if you feel like rerolling, you can also do that.

All character classes are ones that players can find in any other RPG, like a warrior, healer, etc. It is important to have party members that have as many different Jobs as possible because the party will get stronger with each member specializing in one or the other Job.

Combat

Learning combat at a party is also interesting. Players can select what action each member commits during a combat turn. There are 3 forms of attacks: light, medium, and heavy attacks. Players can decide what sort of attack each party mate does at the beginning of a combat turn. In addition to this, all of the attacks have a Bonus meter. This meter can be used only when it is charged up, and it can go up to x4 damage.

This means that a character can do 4 times the damage of a normal attack if that bonus is used. All enemies have weaknesses. Using the proper type of attack to Break the enemies’ defenses is also a very important part of learning combat. Having different Jobs in the party helps here as well because different Jobs make a range of different weapons and magic available to the players.

Most combat situations happen randomly, as players walk around the map. Sometimes though, there are enemies who don’t hide from the party. These enemies are tougher to kill than normal enemies and are known as the Elite enemies. Facing these enemies is not recommended for a beginner, as they have very high defense and attack, and can kill a party if they are strong enough.

Character Skills

All characters in the players’ party keep on leveling up as the game puts the players into random fights. Since all characters have different jobs, when they level up, they can gain access to different skills. There’s a large number of skills that can be upgraded. All of these skills are part of a skill tree, and they require JP to be unlocked and upgraded.

Players acquire JP for their party members as they get into more battles and win them. Once they are upgraded, they increase the stats of party members. Having increased skills and stats for party members makes tough battles easier, and the easy-to-understand skill tree is the icing on the cake.

Limit Breaking

Our party members in CotC have level caps. This means they can’t be leveled up beyond a certain level unless their cap increases. This is where the Limit Break concept comes into play. Limit-breaking is the process where the players use Guidestones to break the level-up cap on the characters, and then they can be leveled up even further. The Guidestones are of two types: Character-specific Guidestones, and regular Guidestones. Which Guidestones the players can use will depend upon the character whose level-up limit they want to break.

Influence and Feats

Along with combat, influence is also an important part of CotC. Influence can be increased with feats. Feats are a kind of Achievements List. This list is a record of the daily and weekly achievements of the players in the game. Since this game is single-player, achievements include defeating tough enemies and completing story milestones. Influence is split into three categories.

Each category is ranked. Categories are power, wealth, and fame. Ranks give you Rubies and passive skills/bonuses. So, in addition to active skills that layers can upgrade through the skill tree, Influence Ranks can help with passive stat boosts and perks. Players must make sure to always check and claim their rewards.

Understanding the in-game Currencies

CotC is a free-to-play game, and like other free-to-play games, it has two different currencies. One of them is Gold/Coins which is the free currency. This can be obtained through battles and campaign missions, and by leveling up party members.

The premium currency is called Rubies, and can be bought with real money. The main use of rubies is to buy level-up materials for the party members, and buffs that provide them with a temporary stat increase. You can also get some in-game items for free with Octopath Traveler CotC redeem codes.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent Beginners Guide: Tips and Tricks

Here are some of our tips in our Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent Beginners Guide to help you, newbies, to kickstart your journey.

  • Always complete the tutorial, in every new run.
  • Make sure you read the little panels that display information about everything new that happens. The little Cat Master always gives out helpful information.
  • When limit-breaking, go for the strongest character in your party, and the healer/support characters. This is to ensure you have a high-level healer ready in case a battle gets a little too dicey.
  • Increase your Influence. As stated before, an increase in Influence rankings gives party members a boost in their power.
  • Like in other RPG games with free-to-play elements, there are daily missions in CotC as well. Doing these will give players much-needed resources. So it is recommended to complete them every day.
  • Players might be wondering if there are so many stat boosts and combat in CotC, what about items? Well, the good news is, there are no items that can be used in any sort of combat situation. So players don’t have to worry about equipping any extra gear.
  • Be very careful when forming your party, because even though a party of eight can be formed, not all of the slots are free. Only four slots are freely available. So choose your members most optimally. A recommended party formation is Warrior, DPS, Healer, and Tank. The warrior here fulfills the role of the primary fighter on the frontline, alongside the tank. The Healer heals up the team during battle, while the DPS pumps out heavy damage from the backline.
  • The last, but most important tip, is to save your data from time to time. This will enable players to play from other devices as well. Because of this, if something happens to the primary playing device, players can continue from where they left off, even on a different device.
