Yu Suzuki is best known as the creator of Shenmue, Virtua Fighter, and tons of other Sega arcades. He is now back and has announced his latest project, a blockbuster arcade shooter Air Twister. The game, exclusive to Apple Arcade, is coming to the platform on June 24, 2022. The arcade shooter follows the story of a character named Princess Arch in a war against alien invaders and helps save the giant swans who are native to her planet.
Suzuki was always a lover of classic arcade games and even shared his love for games like Mystery House and Ultima in a briefing for the game. Excited to be working on a game that was closer to his arcade roots, the development of Air Twister gave him immense satisfaction and joy.
Air Twister will be a touch-panel shooting game without any microtransactions
Suzuki did label the game as a touch-panel shooting game but did not exactly call it a successor to his Space Harrier. “This is my ideal fantasy shooting game. I think when you play it, you will see it has a much different feel,” Suzuki said. With the galore of tech and engines all around to make epic games, Air Twister was able to fit Suzuki’s idea of what it should be. Back in the ’80s, he didn’t have access to high tech, and that gave rise to Space Harrier.
The game footage showed Princess Arch riding the winds across ocean waters full of giant mushrooms and giant fish that carried houses behind them. Also, in a rare surprise for fans, since this is an Apple Arcade game, Princess Arch’s face and outfits can be changed, for free. There wouldn’t be any microtransactions involved.
The game will feature an epic soundtrack
Suzuki got in touch with his long-time idol Valensia, and they collaborated to create Air Twister’s soundtrack; a set of 19 original, full-length tracks from the Dutch composer. They got in touch over Facebo0ok and Suzuki pitched him to create music for the game.
Releasing on June 24, Air Twister is available on Apple Arcade for players. Apple users can get Airpad can get Apple Arcade for $4.99 a month, thus opening not only this particular game but also a large library of curated iOS games.
