Apple reportedly working on a games-focused iOS App Store with social features and achievements

A W move from Apple?

Story Highlights
  • The app will combine Game Center features like achievements, leaderboards, and challenges with store functionality.
  • Users will access both Apple Arcade and App Store games, receive personalized recommendations.
  • Apple is also exploring mini-games through App Clips.

Apple is reportedly working on a new games-oriented iOS app. This integrates elements from the App Store and Game Center with the intent of giving gamers a unified hub to play, buy, and track their progress.

Multiple features are being planned for integration into the Apple Store for Games

According to the exclusive report from 9to5Mac, this app will integrate with existing Game Center profiles to provide access to leaderboards, challenges, and achievements while also centralizing communication and recommendations.

The new app, which some claim mirrors the Xbox app for iPhone, will consist of several tabs, including one for a user’s library of games, and friends, and a Play Now section. This tab will provide editorial content, suggest games, and promote key events. The app will highlight Apple Arcade titles and games available for purchase through the App Store.

Well, if you are not surprised enough by this, there are also rumors suggesting that FaceTime and iMessage will be integrated to ease communication among players. Apple is also working with App Clips to allow mini-games that can demo things quickly within the app.

There is no word yet on when it will drop, but it might come within the iOS 18 update next year or bundled with iOS 19. This could be another step for Apple to strengthen its presence in gaming following Apple Arcade’s launch in 2019 and its more recent attempt to woo top publishers. This will be a direct competition to the Xbox Mobile Gaming App Store.

While Epic Games is bringing new initiatives with the Epic Games Store now live and the ‘Launch Everywhere’ program, Apple will look to step up its game. With many App Markets coming up, a game-oriented store will surely cater to a specific audience.
