Embracer group acquires ‘Hitman Sniper’ publisher Square Enix Montreal along with Eidos and Crystal Dynamics

Big news for gamers across the globe!

Big news in the gaming industry today, as Hitman Sniper publisher Square Enix Montreal announced on Twitter that, they had entered into an agreement with Embracer group for the acquisition of Square Enix Montreal, Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, and a host of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and so long. The agreement was also confirmed on Embracer group’s official website, as well as on Square Enix‘ official Twitter account.

A mega-deal for Embracer group

It’s not every day that netizens see that a publisher as big as Square Enix Montreal acquired, but that is exactly what has transpired today. The acquisition is also expected to include around 1,100 employees around 8 locations around the globe and is expected to cost around 300 million USD. The transaction is expected to be complete sometime around the month of July-September 2022. Embracer group also hosted a webcast presentation for a number of people including media and investors at around 9:00 CET (12:00 PM IST) today.

In the article posted on the website, the Embracer group went into detail about their rationale behind the acquisition. Embrace remarked that they were highly impressed by the diverse portfolio of games developed and published by the studios acquired, most notably the Tomb Raider franchise. Embracer had also stressed their interest, in continuing to invest in such highly popular franchises, while also looking at other IPs such as Thief and Legacy of Kain.

While the acquisition may well be of big news to PC/console gamers, there appears to be something to look forward to for mobile gamers as well. In its article, Embracer also highlighted the acclaim received by mobile game titles that were developed and published by Square Enix Montreal. This will not be limited to games such as Hitman, Deus Ex, and more. Embracer confirmed that the studio will continue to develop more games based on existing AAA IPs.
