Japan hits big in revenue from Mobile Games in 2020

Japan holds a huge 22% of the global revenue from mobile games as of Q3 2020!

With the growth of technology, there is a visible boost in the mobile gaming segment in the past few years. And, to be specific the rise of mobile gaming in the Japanese market has been huge. According to the report from Sensor Tower, in Play Store and App Store, 22% of the global revenue from mobile games is generated from the players of Japan in the first nine months of 2020. Japan’s game developers are constantly creating unique titles that dominate the app stores. There are many acclaimed game publishers like SEGA, Nintendo, and Konami, who have millions of downloads and purchases from their popular titles.


Breaking down the global revenue from mobile games in 2020

To be specific RPG is the most dominating genre in Japan with 50% of the revenue coming alone. Games like Puzzles and Dragons and Monster Strike were the first few games to become billion-dollar free to play the game. Both games were launched in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Titles like Fate series and Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle have also generated billions in revenue. Also, these titles were adapted as anime series where they earned huge royalties. Reports state that, out of the top 10 games, eight of the games were published by Japanese developers, since 2016.

Companies like Square Enix and Bandai Namco altogether generated around $3 Billion in revenue in the first nine months of 2020. In 2019 the revenues earned from abroad crossed $ 1 Billion for the first time. To be specific, Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle and Fate/Grand Order earned the most revenue from abroad, amounting to $546 Million.

The mobile gaming market generated around $5.6 Billion in 2014. Which is 29.2% of the whole revenue earned from mobile games. From 2014 to 2018, Japan was the No. 1 market in the world for combined App Store and Google Play Store mobile games revenue.


The global influence of Japan in mobile gaming

According to speculations, revenue in the Mobile Games segment is projected to reach $6,850M in 2020 from Japan. The current size of the user base is 34.4 Million. And the average revenue per user (ARPU) is expected to amount to $199.05.

Although China dominates the mobile gaming segment with a huge gap. The revenue is projected to be $21,251 Million in 2020 but the average revenue per user (ARPU) is comparatively low than Japan’s. With the rise of PUBG Mobile, COD Mobile and Genshin Impact, the shares went down for Japan.

To conclude, we can see how the Japanese mobile games industry is dominating the mobile games industry in 2020 and will be looking forward to dominating the market in the future as well.
