Sea Ltd. to shut down streaming platform Booyah! after facing a quarterly loss of almost $1 billion

The streaming platform Booyah has been announced to shut down by Sea Ltd., the parent firm of well-known game developer and publisher Garena. The organization has further announced to cancellation of several projects that were in the planning stage following a massive $1 billion quarterly loss. Additionally, Sea Ltd. will lay off a few of its workers who are associated with those business units.

Originally founded by Garena, Sea Limited is a Singapore-based tech firm. In 2017, the business changed its name to Sea after creating its most popular game, Free Fire. The company’s share price is currently falling due to a number of problems.

Improving efficiency and creating long-term strength of the Sea’s ecosystem will get close attention

An official from Sea Ltd. stated that the adjustments will be centered on the “long-term strength of the ecosystem” and that they were intended to increase efficiency in the activities that have an impact on many different jobs, as reported by Reuters. Throughout the pandemic, the company has seen a number of setbacks. The popular battle royale game Free Fire from Garena was banned in India in February of last year.

Due to the loss of such a sizable market, the corporation saw its market share decline by $16 billion in a single day immediately following the ban. Additionally, the company’s online store Shopee pulled out of the French market. There was no choice except for Sea to reduce its workforce and shut down the streaming service Booyah!

Numerous other initiatives, such as the public cloud and blockchain, which were significant Sea Lab experimental endeavors, will have the same problems as Booyah! A dozen jobs will be lost at Sea Lab, compared to nearly 40 at the streaming platform. By the end of 2021, the corporation employed twice as many people as the previous year, or about 67,000 people. The restriction on its gaming app, however, drowned the share price and caused a 39% decline in Garena’s quarterly paying users.
