Shipyard Games, the Supercell-backed mobile games studio has confirmed to shut down. In a bittersweet announcement, Shipyard Games has revealed that it will be ceasing operations, which also effectively ended the development of its promising geolocation game, Wizards & Kingdoms GO.
Shipyard Games announced the shut down on its official Discord channel back in May 2024
Andreas Wedenberg, the CEO of Shipyard Games confirmed that the game garnered a rapidly growing and passionate community since its early release two months ago. Despite launching with limited content designed for 1-2 weeks of gameplay, the game’s players continued to engage and eagerly await more content.
He shared the roadmap of what was planned for the game, which was a grand list for sure. However, Shipyard Games faced critical financial difficulties. It was also mentioned that the company had been running out of funds, and their previous investor decided not to continue supporting them. Shipyard Games had secured $2.9 million in seed funding from Supercell back in April 2017.
This unfortunate turn of events meant that the Helsinki-based studio had to say its goodbyes. The news was conveyed through the studio’s Discord channel in May 2024. As a result, Wizards & Kingdoms GO no longer received updates, and eventually, the game was taken offline since the company could no longer afford to maintain the servers.
On behalf of the team, Andreas wrote a heartfelt gratitude to the community, saying: “We sincerely appreciate all of your help, amazing feedback, bug reports, memes, tutorials, and kind words for the team. We are very sorry we could not finish the game you all deserve, but unfortunately, dreams often need money to become true, and we ran out of it.”
The original announcement stated that the company would shut down in about two months, it has now been nearly three months. Despite this delay, it is a sad state of affairs that marks the end of a chapter for Shipyard Games, which had appeared so promising.
