Studio Sirah secured $830k in a seed funding round; developing Indian mythology based CCG Kurukshetra: Ascension

The pandemic-born company arose out of a desire to see Indian game content

Studio Sirah has raised $830k in a funding round led by Lumikai and other investors, which the studio plans to spend on their first game, Kurukshetra: Ascension, a strategic CCG-based on India’s epic mythology.

Team of two brothers

The studio is currently led by two brothers, Abhaas Shah and Prateek Shah. Both grew up playing games like Age of Empire. Both brothers had graduated from American universities and had jobs in the big leagues. Prateek Shah from Georgia Tech, who later worked for Nvidia, and Abhaas Shah from UC Berkley, formerly worked at Bain

Motivation behind Studio Sirah: Lack of Indian content in games

Prateek and Abhaas had the idea to start a game company while they were in lockdown during the pandemic last year. The major spark to start a game company was the lack of Indian content in most games, according to an interview with GamesBeat

“We didn’t see any good Indian content that we would like to play as gamers. There are a lot of hypercasual and casual games, but these are not games that appeal to us.”

Studio Sirah was founded a year ago. The main focus of the studio was on mid-core games. The first game will be a card battle game with characters from Indian myths. It would be a great move to present Indian content in this space after games showcasing Greek mythology. The game is inspired by India’s two greatest epic myths: the Mahabharat and the Ramayan, which include stories of gods and heroes and events from warfare. With rich and dense lore, the game will have its own stories and characters for more engaging and will modernize the story a bit.

Future Plans

Future titles will include content from India’s great mythos and history, Abhaas said. As far as the compatibility of platforms, the co-founders said they’ll consider diversifying and bring their games to platforms other than PC and Mobile. The studio team currently has a strength of seven people and they are currently hiring.
