The future of The Sims takes “mobile-first” shape as EA outlines 2026 with new ideas and experiences

2026 is shaping up to be exciting!

Story Highlights
  • EA confirms major expansion of The Sims across mobile, PC, and console platforms in 2026.
  • Project Rene, not Sims 5, is now a social, collaborative, mobile-first life simulation experience.
  • With The Sims Mobile shutting down this month, the focus on mobile seems to be a priority.

Electronic Arts has kicked off 2026 with a detailed update on where The Sims franchise is headed. For mobile players, there’s plenty to be excited about, especially with several long-term plans now coming into focus.

Extensive playtesting through The Sims Labs will continue throughout 2026

In its latest development update, EA shared that the core values of The Sims remain unchanged. The franchise continues to focus on inclusivity, creativity, freedom of expression, and community-driven play. According to the team, these values guide every design decision as they move into the next era of the series.

A major part of this future is the expansion of Sims experiences across PC, console, and mobile. Rather than focusing on a single flagship title, EA is now building a connected family of Sims games, each designed to stand on its own.

This move has been made clear in the last couple of months, as we have seen a few Sims games made available. While The Sims Lab: Life Together soft-launched on iOS, The Sims Labs: Town Stories was released on both Android and iOS, again as a soft launch in November last year.

At the same time, the franchise is expanding into new directions. Project Rene, once thought to be The Sims 5, has now clearly evolved into a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-simulation experience. It is not a direct successor to The Sims 4. Instead, it is a separate free-to-play game focused on multiplayer creativity and shared play.

This direction is not entirely new. As far back as 2024, EA had already outlined its ambitions for the franchise, particularly on mobile. At the time, the company revealed that The Sims would expand into mobile narrative games and more varied experiences.

Throughout 2026, EA will continue extensive playtesting across multiple Sims products. Through The Sims Labs, players may see early prototypes, experimental features, and limited regional tests. With The Sims Mobile shutting down on January 20, 2026, the stakes for these new projects are higher than ever.
