Xbox is reportedly exploring native mobile ports starting with Sea of Thieves, following multiple failures in the console market

Another Xbox W or L?

Story Highlights
  • Xbox reportedly explores native mobile ports beyond Game Pass.
  • Sea of Thieves could launch on Android and Switch 2.
  • Mobile expansion could become Xbox’s new long-term growth strategy.

The gaming console giant under Microsoft, Xbox, is one of the largest console manufacturers in the market currently, but in the console wars, it has been lagging tremendously. After having a leadership shakeup, mass layoffs, and a ton of game studio closures under its wing, it seems Xbox has finally set its sights on the mobile gaming sector.

If you think this is related to Game Pass or the Xbox mobile store, it is not. Because this time, it seems Xbox may be exploring another way to expand beyond consoles.

Successful mobile performance may open doors for older Xbox titles

According to HTD_Blog, who previously worked as a games journalist for Gamebattles between 2007 and 2010 before this Activision acquisition, Microsoft is reportedly exploring how its less-intensive games could perform on mobile devices.

By focusing on less-demanding titles, the company could potentially deliver ports with better optimization and more suitable pricing, especially considering that mobile gaming has traditionally not had a strong premium gaming market culture. This will start with the mobile port of Sea of Thieves.

The internal discussions have indicated that if Sea of Thieves is successful, older games may also get ported to Android. But Sea of Thieves is not only being developed for Android, according to HTD_Blog’s claims, it is also being developed for the other portable console, Nintendo Switch 2.

The Android version is reportedly native, with no streaming involved, although a controller is recommended. No Apple version is currently planned. As for the Switch 2 version, it is said to be released as a download-only title.

The release window for the release of the first of these mobile ports is being targeted for Q1 2027, and will be a shadow-drop, according to him. And if Sea of Thieves is successful on mobile, other older games may also be ported to Android. I hope they deliver a proper port without performance issues, or else it will be another disaster on Xbox’s list of mess-ups.

All of this could be part of how the new Xbox CEO, Asha Sharma, plans to improve profit margins, especially after the Game Pass fumbles and decisions, keeping the mobile store idea alive, mass layoffs of game developers, shutdowns of beloved game studios, cancellation of multiple games, and the ongoing negotiations around more Xbox-owned studios potentially being closed or reorganized.

Compared to those moves, this seems like a different strategy and one that could have less impact in terms of studio closures and developer layoffs.

Final Thoughts

The real question in the end is, will Xbox be able to finally get back on its feet after a decade-old streak of generational fumbles? Will releasing their first games on mobile platforms help them get back up? Let’s hope they don’t make the same mistake they did in the past by rejecting mobile games like Genshin Impact and losing a lot of revenue and player base, as it went with the Sony partnership, and helped grow their competitor.
