EA Sports FC Mobile Review: A sweet dish with a bite of sour

How does EA's title fare, without FIFA?

EA Sports FC Mobile, after much anticipation and excitement, has finally made its worldwide debut. The global release occurred on September 26, 2023, seamlessly delivered as a content update without the need for a new separate app to download. This update introduced a multitude of changes, encompassing gameplay enhancements, updated commentary, and a refreshed user interface, among other improvements. However, numerous mixed opinions have arisen regarding the new game, so in this article, we will provide an in-depth review of the latest version of EA Sports FC Mobile.

The aesthetically pleasing graphics and camera elements are an improvement

Before you come at me for this, just compare the title with the FIFA franchise, try it once. Comparing the visual looks of the game? Are you done? Tada! Am I not right? The game looks way better than what we initially expected, and this is precisely why we are completely hooked on it.

The presentations have seen a significant upgrade, and guess what? Those faces are as recognizable as ever. The Pitch looks better, and green is greener, lying on the saturated side, which is my interest. Our trusty device can handle Ultra settings at a silky-smooth 60fps, and we must say, the improvement in graphics and gameplay is real.

Have you noticed the camera movements for your free kicks or penalties? That is another detail we liked about the new update. It makes the set pieces look better than usual. All these may be minor tweaks, but goodness, they’ve spiced up the game’s visual appeal in the most delightful way.

Gameplay mechanics get a slight change yet leave mixed reactions

Over the years, one aspect of FIFA Mobile that I’ve had concerns about is the gameplay, particularly its robotic nature. This year, after examining the EA Sports FC Mobile beta, we had hoped for some improvements, and fortunately, there are some positive changes. One notable improvement for me is in the shooting mechanics.

In previous seasons, you could simply tap a button, and the player would unleash incredibly powerful shots on goal. However, in this iteration of EA Sports FC Mobile, that’s no longer the case. The shooting feels more humanized and less overpowering. Well, that powerful shooting didn’t vanish, since we have something called a Power Shot which blasts into the net, or in my case, the crossbar. Well, for the rest of the cases, we have our complaints.

Controls are okay, however, the player movement is a major concern. Yes, it is in the initial stages but it isn’t very pleasing while you play. Defending didn’t get a healthy overhaul apart from a hard defense ability that we fail to execute most of the time. Too many mistakes happen, and apart from the slide tackles we haven’t enjoyed defending. Well, overall the gameplay is nicely paced, but still, I would rather enjoy attacking all day.

Team Management is more fun with the Locker Room

Personally, the new team management system absolutely rocks, thanks to the Locker Room. We were pretty happy when we first saw this. In FIFA Mobile, everything was crammed onto one page, and it was just data overload, making a mess of the screen. But here, we really appreciate the way they’ve organized things. It’s a much cleaner and more user-friendly setup, and it’s made a world of difference.

Interestingly, the inclusion of player face scans is a delightful update, even though I have to admit, that Ferran looks downright hilarious in that image above. What’s even cooler is that you can now customize team kit numbers, tweak the dress sleeves, and mess around with other details – something I’ve always wished for in football games (yes, I’m giving you the side-eye, eFootball 2024).

Oh, and here’s a game-changer: player ratings are now influenced when they’re played out of position. Say goodbye to the days of spamming high OVR (Overall Rating) players all over the field. It’s all about simplicity, and EA has nailed it beautifully.

Gamemodes have been the game’s positive, good music keeps things nice

The game’s variety of game modes has definitely been a strong point in the franchise, and it doesn’t disappoint this season either. You can a fully licensed UEFA Champions League tournament that is now live as I’m writing this review and plenty of other modes which give you plenty of content to wander about. Also, let’s not forget about the fantastic music running in the background that adds a pleasant touch to the overall experience.

The game is/was still a feast for pay-to-play players

Honestly, there’s not much to say about this. The game is and always has been a playground for pay-to-play enthusiasts, and that hasn’t changed. The expensive match pass is still very much a thing, and we don’t have any complaints about that. There are plenty of paid packs available, but at the moment, they don’t seem like a worthwhile purchase. On the bright side, you can snag some goodies through ads without any annoying interruptions. So, there’s that!

Final Verdict

All boils down to this, the Final Verdict of my EA Sports FC Mobile Review. I can confidently say that improvements in the latest EA Sports FC Mobile can be clearly seen, as it outpaces its FIFA counterpart in terms of visual appeal and presentation.

However, we are still not convinced about the gameplay, looks too static to me, which has room for improvement. The Locker Room is my favorite aspect, thanks to which player customization is an option, which is a welcome addition. Hopefully, the game will improve as the updates come. Wishful thinking I must say, which has been the case for years.

Good

A decent attempt by EA to get us a better experience compared to the previous versions, which could have been a lot better with some improvements.
