Clash Royale Champion Cards: List of Cards, Abilities, Strategies, and more

Champions of the game!

Clash Royale has a plethora of cards that players can try out, from different rarities such as Commons and Epics, and one of them would be the Champion. Introduced to Clash Royale in 2021, the Champion rarity has rapidly emerged as one of the most formidable card rarities in the game. In this article, I am going to discuss Champion Rarity Cards thoroughly from the Clash Royale universe, covering card lists, special powers, their strategic usages, and more.

Champion Cards in Clash Royale

As previously mentioned, Champion is a unique card rarity in Clash Royale that unlocks at level 11. What sets Champion cards apart is their distinct abilities that require Elixir to activate, providing each Champion card with a special power according to its unique ability. Importantly, these abilities remain in effect only as long as the Champion card remains active.

Currently, the Champion rarity has a roster of six cards, which includes the Skeleton King, Archer Queen, Golden Knight, Mighty Miner, Monk, and the recent addition in Little Prince. However, there was also a limited-period Champion in Terry, inspired by the Hog Rider, but currently, it is unavailable.

It’s essential to note that in a deck, you can have only one Champion card at a time, keeping in mind the balance of power in your Clash Royale battles. So, keeping in mind all of the details shared, let us look at the list of cards available in the game.

List of all Clash Royale Champion Cards

Archer Queen

  • Elixir Cost: 5
  • Special Ability: Cloaking Cape
  • Special Ability Cost: 1

Introduction

The Archer Queen, unlocked at Royal Crypt (Arena 17), deploys a single-target, medium-ranged, air-targeting ground troop with moderate stats. She resembles an Archer but sports a crown, purple hair, a larger quiver, and wields a crossbow while being barefoot.

Inspired by the Clash Universe’s very own Clash of Clans Hero, she comes here as a Champion card, where she re-enters your cycle upon defeat. Her unique ability Cloaking Cape turns her invisible, similar to the Royal Ghost and also to her ability in Clash of Clans, and significantly boosts her attack speed briefly. Deploying the Archer Queen costs 5 Elixir, with an additional 1 Elixir for her ability.

Strategies

The best use of Queen comes with her ability, so a tank, say Giant or Mini PEKKA upfront will be an excellent use case to protect her. You can also pair her with a building like Tesla for strong defensive plays, or support her with spells like Fireball or The Log to clear swarms. Meanwhile, Zap or The Log can be played to interrupt her ability and counter her with cheap distractions.

Golden Knight

  • Elixir Cost: 4
  • Special Ability: Dashing Dash
  • Special Ability Cost: 1

Introduction

The Golden Knight, unlocked at Executioner’s Kitchen (Arena 16), is a powerful Champion card in Clash Royale. This single-target, ground melee troop boasts high hitpoints and moderate damage. He can be said to belong to the Knight family, but he has something extra to offer.

The Golden Knight’s unique ability boosts his movement speed when no enemies are nearby, allowing him to dash onto opponent troops sequentially. What makes this even more deadly is that he can do that up to 10 times consecutively or until no further valid targets are within range. The Golden Knight costs 4 Elixir to deploy, with an additional 1 Elixir required to activate his ability.

Strategies

Coming to the strategies, the Golden Knight pairs well with fast troops like Hog Rider and Battle Ram, using his dash to clear swarms, and this makes it easy to keep an opening to push other troops. To counter the Golden Knight, use cheap units like Skeletons or Ice Spirit to distract him, while air troops like Minions or Bats can easily counter him.

Little Prince

  • Elixir Cost: 3
  • Special Ability: Royal Rescue
  • Special Ability Cost: 3

Introduction

The newest addition to Clash Royale, The Little Prince, unlocked at Silent Sanctuary (Arena 18), arrived in Season 53 November 2023 update. This ground troop armed with a repeating crossbow, targets air and has long-range capabilities, moderate hitpoints, and low damage.

As a Champion card, the Little Prince remains out of the card cycle until defeated, making a return afterward. His special ability involves summoning the tank named Guardienne, an armored figure with a large sword and a distinctive appearance. Deploying a Little Prince card costs 3 Elixir, with 3 Elixir needed to unleash his ability, making it the costliest champion ability.

Strategies

Little Prince is surely a heavy hitter, but he isn’t good enough as a lone card. So, pair him with tanks like Giant or Electro Giant upfront so that they can take the damage in for him. Cheap swarms like Goblins, Spear Goblins, or Minions to overwhelm him before he activates his ability would be great counters to minimize the threats.

Mighty Miner

  • Elixir Cost: 4
  • Special Ability: Explosive Escape
  • Special Ability Cost: 1

Introduction

Released in the Miner Update in 2022, the Mighty Miner is unlocked from the Royal Crypt (Arena 17). He comes as a ground-targeting, melee troop that boasts high hitpoints and increasing damage over time. He appears as a sturdy figure with a mustache, blue shorts, and a hat with an advanced helmet, and wields a giant drill resembling the Goblin Drill.

The Mighty Miner’s special ability, named the Explosive Escape, allows him to dig underground and reappear in the horizontally opposite lane, leaving behind a bomb that explodes after 1 second, dealing medium area damage and knockback to both ground and air units. Deploying the Mighty Miner costs 4 Elixir, with an additional 1 Elixir required to activate his ability.

Strategies

His ability Explosive Escape helps to clear out swarms effectively, so if you are overwhelmed with too many troops, use it. I’ve noticed stronger distractions, say Tombstone or Furnace that provide great value against the Mighty Miner works against him. Stun cards, say the Electro Spirit or the Zap help disrupt his attack.

Monk

  • Elixir Cost: 5
  • Special Ability: Pensive Protection
  • Special Ability Cost:

Introduction

Next up comes the Monk. Unlocked from the Silent Sanctuary (Arena 18), he is a ground-targeting, melee troop that has high hitpoints and moderate damage. The Monk executes a 3-hit combo: the first two strikes deal normal damage, while the third delivers extra damage and knockback, even affecting troops normally immune to knockback.

The Monk’s special ability, Pensive Protection, reduces incoming damage by 80% and reflects projectile attacks to their source. This ability also causes spells to reflect toward the nearest opposing Crown Tower. Deploying the Monk costs 5 Elixir, with an additional 1 Elixir needed to activate his ability.

Strategies

Deploy the Monk near vulnerable cards to protect them from weak spells like Arrows or Log. His ability reflects these spells to the opponent, denying them value, and gaining you an advantage. Monk can be lethal when left alone, so use high-damage spells such as Lightning or Rocket to eliminate him, especially when he activates his ability.

Skeleton King

  • Elixir Cost: 4
  • Special Ability: Soul Summoning
  • Special Ability Cost: 2

Introduction

Unlocked from the Executioner’s Kitchen (Arena 16), The Skeleton King is a ground-targeting, melee troop with high hitpoints and moderate area damage. As a Champion card, the Skeleton King remains out of the player’s card cycle while deployed, returning only after defeat. He looks like the Giant Skeleton somewhat, but with the allure of a king.

Now, the Skeleton King’s special ability, just like the name suggests, is spooky. With Skeletons around him, the Skeleton King turns fallen troops into souls which he collects. The number of souls determines the number of Skeletons summoned when the ability is activated. Deploying the Skeleton King costs 4 Elixir, with 2 Elixir for his ability, which is costly compared to the other cards.

Strategies

One of the best strategies I have personally used is to deploy Skeleton King alongside swarm troops like Skeleton Army, which is a huge boost to his ability to gain souls. This comes with a cost too sometimes, as it becomes easy with splash damage units like Bowler or Valkyrie to counter the Skeleton King and his spawned Skeletons.
