Wuthering Waves is a free-to-play open-world action RPG available on PC through the Epic Games Store, as well as on iOS and Android via their respective app stores. I’m excited to share this Wuthering Waves beginners guide to help you get started in the game, covering what to prioritize, how to maximize your progress, and more.

The game was first announced in May 2022 by the creators of Punishing Gray Raven. It entered its first closed beta phase in March 2023, followed by a second round of closed beta testing in January 2024 for both Android and iOS platforms. In January 2024, the developers also introduced a creator program, providing details on how interested individuals can join or apply. Additionally, you’ll find some redeem codes and a reroll guide to help you kick off your adventure.

Wuthering Waves Gameplay Basics

Wuthering Waves is a game that features open-world exploration with a rich and diverse narrative and a high degree of combat freedom. Players act as Rovers, who awaken after a long period of slumber and embark on adventures in a world defined by a new era, environment, and technology. Exploration is a crucial part of Wuthering Waves, allowing players to roam various areas of the map in search of treasure chests, enemies, puzzles, and more.

Thoroughly exploring the map accelerates progression, as opening chests, completing side quests, and defeating bosses for the first time rewards players with Union-level experience, Astrite, and other valuable items. Combat in Wuthering Waves is very dynamic. While players can build teams of three Resonators, only one character is active on the field at a time. However, you can switch between them at any moment, with each character possessing Intro and Outro skills that activate when they enter or leave the field.

Which 5-star to choose in Wuthering Waves

As you progress and start in the game, a free five-star character option will be given to you along the way. Like other gacha games, a 5-star character is among the strongest options to get and a much more comfortable character to use in a lot of game modes.

Here are all the five-star characters you can select:

  • Verina
  • Encore
  • Calcharo
  • Lingyang
  • Jianxin

As a beginner, it is highly recommended to choose Verina, Calcharo, or Encore, as they are among the strongest current choices. However, you can still opt for characters you prefer based on their playstyle, mobility, or fun mechanics, such as Lingyang with his flying ability and Jianxin with her hybrid playstyle.

Wuthering Waves Element System

Characters, also known as Resonators, each possess a specific element, while the Main Character, Rover, can utilize all elements. The available elements are:

  • Spectro (Light)
  • Havoc (Dark)
  • Fusion (Fire)
  • Aero (Wind)
  • Glacio (Ice)
  • Electro (Lightning)

Characters do not deal physical damage; instead, their attacks inflict elemental damage, except for Echo Skills.

Wuthering Waves Weapon Types

There are currently five weapon types in the game, each offering a unique playstyle, animation, and attack pattern, as well as varying numbers of Normal Attacks. These weapon types are:

  • Broadblade
  • Gauntlets
  • Pistols
  • Rectifier
  • Sword

All weapons are capable of mining any kind of ore or breaking any stone. However, certain weapon types, such as Pistols and Rectifiers, have different methods to parry or may not be able to parry at all. Some parry through plunging attacks, while others use specific skills.

Wuthering Waves Beginners Guide: Tips and Tricks

Continuing with this Wuthering Waves beginner’s guide, there are essential tips and things to take note of if you want to maximize your time as a beginner. You need to understand that prioritizing other things may be more worthwhile and could help you have a greater boost. Here are more tips below:

1. Complete Story Quest and get a higher Union Level

Completing story quests is essential for progressing in Wuthering Waves. There are various types of quests, including main quests, exploration quests, companion quests, and side quests. Each quest type rewards you with Astrite, which can be used for pulls, and experience points that help you level up.

Additionally, these quests introduce you to new mechanics and characters, enriching your understanding of the game. Focusing on story quests not only boosts your Union Level but also provides valuable rewards that aid your progression. Make sure to engage with all available quests to maximize your benefits.

2. Utilize and maximize Echoes

Echoes are powerful tools that come in sets, each with unique effects. These effects activate when you have two or five echoes from the same set. It’s important to note that each echo must be unique; equipping the same echo twice won’t grant the 5-piece effect.

However, the Shiny version of an echo is considered different, allowing you to use it alongside the regular version. Out of the five Echo slots, the first slot is special as it allows the Echo to use its Echo Skill. Strategically equipping and maximizing your Echoes can significantly enhance your character’s abilities.

3. Explore Trophies and Achievements for rewards

Trophies and achievements are not just for bragging rights as they offer substantial rewards that can aid your journey. By completing various challenges and milestones, you can earn valuable items, currency, and boosts.

Regularly check the trophies and achievements section to see what goals you can work towards. This not only provides a sense of accomplishment but also equips you with resources that can give you an edge in the game. Don’t overlook these as they can be a steady source of rewards.

4. Explore the Map and unlock all checkpoints

Thoroughly exploring the map is crucial in Wuthering Waves. Unlocking checkpoints helps you travel quickly across different regions, making it easier to complete quests and find treasures. As you explore, you’ll encounter various enemies, puzzles, and hidden chests that provide valuable rewards.

The more you explore, the faster you progress by gaining experience points and collecting items. Make it a priority to unlock all checkpoints and thoroughly explore each area to ensure you’re not missing out on any hidden rewards.

5. Utilize the Shop properly

The in-game shop is a valuable resource for obtaining items that can aid your progression. It’s important to spend your currency wisely, focusing on items that provide the most significant benefits. Look for deals and limited-time offers that give you more value for your currency.
