Watcher of Realms Designer Director Interview delves into game journey, character designs, and more

Watcher of Realms, the adventure RPG developed by MOONTON, has been closing in on a fantastic first anniversary, and thanks to this, we got a chance to sit an Interview with Swee Tang, the Designer Director of Watcher of Realms, who delved into the game journey from scratch, design, and creation of high-quality heroes, the first year assessment of the game and more other topics, which we will be sharing to you viewers in this space.

1. First anniversary of the game, the first milestone for Watcher of Realms. How are you feeling about reaching this landmark?

Swee: Now I feel relieved. Indeed, our team has just completed the contents of our 1st Anniversary, and we have made lots of creative ideas and put so much effort into our 1st Anniversary version. Hope that all players can feel our sincerity.

2. How was the development journey of the game from scratch, given the ambitions of the game and the final product were high?

Swee: It is an interesting journey with challenges and hardships that we started from scratch to develop a game. Although there are lots of difficulties when we develop Watcher of Realms, the difficulties motivate our passion and creativity.

We combine fantasy elements and tower defense gameplay to build a fascinating world that can attract players. We enjoy all the time when we develop Watcher of Realms. 

In our development process, we created numerous heroes with unique characteristics, including unique appearances, skills, and background stories. We’ve also added a unique setting called faction based on our heroes to provide a better game experience with deep strategic gameplay.

We also learned the essence of turn-based RPGs and SRPGs, and we tried to integrate the essence into Watcher of Realms to provide better strategic gameplay for players. Meanwhile, we create unique PvP mode and GvG mode based on Tower Defense, which brings new challenges and interests to players. We are so happy that we can try to create interesting new game modes for players.

3. Could you elaborate on the unique abilities and characteristics of the upcoming three heroes and how they will impact the current meta of the game?

Swee: First, Anora can summon her minions called Labor when she is deployed, and Labor will help Anora to fight with enemies. Anora and Labor are good at clearing numerous enemies, so Anora can shine in Gear Raid I and GvG. By the way, Anora will be one of the core heroes in Summon Team. We will release more heroes who can help a lot in the Summon Team.

Ymiret is a powerful ice dragon from the mysterious unnamable faction. He has two forms, which means that he can deal with not only physical damage but also magic damage. When he deals damages, he will apply a unique Winter’s Bite effect, which will restrict enemies’ movement. Ymiret should be good at Gear Dungeon and Anti-Air PvP Arena.

Finally, let me introduce Helga. She is a fighter who can deal with long-range attacks, and when she uses his ultimate, she can deal with multiple attacks and apply stunning effects on enemies quickly. She should be a good choice in Immortal Codex and the new Guild Boss mode based on her skills.

4. What inspired the design and creation of high-quality hero CG and PV, and what can players expect in terms of the atmosphere they create?

Swee: We designed Anora/Ymiret CG based on our main plot and the lore in Watcher of Realms. We hope that this CG is not only good at audio-visual effects but also makes a breakthrough in the stories. We hope that players will know that their actions and choices will affect the game world directly.

We will create event stages for players. For the event stages, our goal is to create a game experience similar to DLC in console games. When players complete the main quests in Watcher of Realms, they can also experience interesting stories with depth and richness. We plan to develop the main plot by showing the stories in event stages. When players enjoy our game, they can also see an interesting game world made by themselves.

5. You mentioned the release of at least two new KVs, one focusing on important heroes like the dragon and dragonkin, and another on a party hosted by the new heroes. Can you share more about the themes and artistic direction of these?

Swee: Key visual about dragon and dragon lady: In the new stories, Ymiret and Anora will show a sad love story. This key visual shows a warm scene between Ymiret and Anora before the stories in our event stages. With our 1st Anniversary fireworks, Ymiret and Anora huddle together to wait for the early morning. Key visual about the party: Because this is the 1st Anniversary of Watcher of Realms, we prepared a lot of events, rewards, and surprises for players, which is similar to a party with cakes, candies, and flowers. We hope that all players can enjoy the 1st Anniversary Party hosted by Watcher of Realms. We thank all players who support us, and we welcome new players to join our party.

6. What was the idea behind the limited game mode being introduced in Watcher of Realms?

Swee: This is a new try. We keep creating new content for all players. 1st Anniversary is a good time to launch the limited game mode called Eternal Spire, so players focusing on deep strategic gameplay will have more fun in Eternal Spire. Meanwhile, we will hear the suggestions from players to find the right way to develop our new stages. Some limited game modes will have a chance to become regular game modes.

7. Could you explain how mission mode works in detail and what kind of challenges players can expect to face?

Swee: Players will have a brand new game experience in Eternal Spire. In Eternal Spire, all heroes will be balanced to the same level and status, and these heroes cannot get bonuses from their equipment and artifacts. Before players challenge the stages, they can choose appropriate missions to increase the difficulty level of the stage. We believe that players can experience an interesting stage with more challenges and deep strategies.

8. If you were to assess your first year of Watcher of Realms, what are your learnings from it?

Swee: Looking back to our first year, we have valuable experiences and deep insights. The most important lesson for us is that we must hear the voices of players and provide better game experiences for players.

We learned how to use the knowledge we have to face future challenges. We also need to create more interesting content that will fulfill the needs of players.

The satisfaction and participation of players are the key to success. We will learn all the lessons in the past year as our principles. We believe that we can put efforts into game development to build a solid foundation for Watcher of Realms.

9. What is next in store for the players and your plan to improve the existing experience?

Swee: In the future, we will keep launching new main stages with new stories, and we will also improve the experiences of PvP mode. We plan to add real-time battles for PvP game mode, so players can feel the fun of real-time tower defense battles. We will also add more interesting content for GvG game mode, like new maps, demon soldiers, and gameplay.

We will also plan to launch a roguelike mode with infinite stages, so players can keep enjoying interesting tower defense gameplay. Besides these tower defense gameplays, we also plan to launch a camp construction gameplay which is a new try.
