Pokemon Go Guide: Tips to counter and beat Cliff in July 2022

Best way to beat the most unpredictable Team GO Rocket member!

Pokémon GO is bringing a steady stream of new challenges, events, and changes in this new season. This season of Niantic’s very popular AR-based game is all about celebrating the game and what better way to do it than by defeating Team GO Rocket as they are trying to take over Pokémon GO. Here is our Pokémon Go Guide to counters for defeating Cliff in July 2022, the team leader which will further lead the way to the fight with the Team GO Rocket boss, Giovani.

How to counter and defeat Cliff in Pokémon Go

Cliff is one of the toughest members of Team GO Rocket and is also known as the Big-Hearted Ruffian. He will be using shadow pokemon to fight the players consisting of Electric, Rock, and Water PokémonS with all of them sharing a few weaknesses. Players who will put together the right team will be able to claim victory and a Shadow Pokémon would be rewarded to them. Players can rematch Cliff if they lose the first time and this guide will help them to put together the perfect Team to defeat each of his Shadow Pokémons.

Cliff’s First Pokémon

Bulbasaur is going to be Cliff’s first Pokémon which is a dual-type Grass and Poison Pokémon. It is weak to Fire, Ice, Psychic and Flying attacks and players should try to burn as many shields as possible during the fight as this would make defeating Cliff a much easier task and Bulbasaur would be fairly easy to defeat too.

  • Moltres: Fire Spin/Sky Attack
  • Mewtwo: Psycho Cut/Psystrike
  • Blaziken: Fire Spin/Blast Burn
  • Tornadus: Gust/Hurricane

Cliff’s Second Pokémon

Cliff’s Second Pokémon can be either of the three shadow pokemon namely Crowbat, Venusaur, and Omastar. Here’s how to counter and defeat each of them respectively.

Crobat is a dual-type Poison and Flying Pokémon and players will need to use Electric, Ice, Psychic, and Rock counters to defeat it. It is also recommended to keep shielding throughout the match and fight swiftly.

  • Alakazam: Psycho Cut/Psychic
  • Exeggutor: Extrasensory/Psychic
  • Galceon: Ice Shard/Ice Blast
  • Raikou: Thunder Shock/Wild Charge

Venusaur is the last evolution stage of Bulbasaur and just like the latter, it is a dual-type Grass and Poison-type Pokémon which means it is weak towards Fire, Ice, Psychic and Flying attacks. Now the counters mentioned above for Bulbasaur will also work for Venusaur but here are some more alternative options for the players to use against it.

  • Alakazam: Psycho Cut/Psychic
  • Mamoswine: Powder Snow/Avalanche
  • Magmortar: Fire Spin/Fire Punch
  • Honchkrow: Peck/Psychic
  • Victini: Confusion/V-Create

Omastar is a Water and Rock-type Pokemon and is pretty easy to take down with Grass-type counters because it is two times more vulnerable to them. It is also weak towards Electric, Fighting, and Ground-type counters. It is recommended to use Grass-type Pokémons against Omastar regardless of which moveset it holds because almost every time it is effective.

Cliff’s Third Pokémon

This time too Cliff might use three shadow pokemon namely Tyranitar, Torterra, and Swampert as his third Pokémon. Here are the best counters in July 2022 for every one of them respectively.

Tyranitar is a dual-type Dark and Rock Pokémon and is two times more vulnerable to Fighting-type counters. While being a strong Pokémon it can be defeated quite easily and with very little effort because of its various weaknesses such as Fighting, Bug, Fairy, Grass  Ground, Steel, and Water-type counters.

  • Kyogre: Waterfall/Surf/Thunder
  • Melmetal: Thunder Shock/Rock Slide/Superpower
  • Machamp: Counter/Cross Chop/ Rock Slide/
  • Swampert: Mud Shot/Hydro Cannon/Earthquake
  • Gyarados: Dragon Breath/Aqua Tail/Crunch

Swampert is a Water and Ground-type Pokémon that is two times weaker than Grass-type counters and most of the counters are thus based on using the weakness against it. Swampert can be a very messy opponent to fight against for the players if they don’t have a Grass-type Pokémon in their team.

  • Torterra: Razor Leaf/ Frenzy Plant
  • Bellossom: Bullet Seed/Leaf Blade
  • Leafeon: Bullet Sead/Leaf Blade
  • Vileplume: Razor Leaf/Moomblast

Torterra is yet another dual-type Grass and Ground Pokémon and is two times more vulnerable to Ice-type attacks. It is also weak towards Bug, Fire, and Flying-type counters.

  • Darmanitan (Galarian): Ice Fang/Ice Punch
  • Mamoswine: Powder Snow/Avalanche
  • Jynx: Frost Breath/Ice Punch
  • Glaceon: Frost Breath/ Icy Wind
  • Mewtwo: Psycho Cut/Ice Beam
  • Lapras: Frost Breath/ Ice Beam

To defeat Cliff, players should have  Psychic, Grass, and Ice-type Pokémons in their teams. One of the best counters to defeat Cliff in Pokémon Go July 2022 is with a combination of Mewtwo, Zarude, and Galarian Darmanitan. One could also get a Fighting-type Pokémon in their team like Blaziken has it is a great choice too.

If the players don’t have the counters listed above, they just need to focus on the weakness of Cliff’s Pokémons and take their strongest options into the battle. Players should make sure to come up with a strategy beforehand and power up their Pokémons completely before going into the fight.
