Rocket League Sideswipe Volleyball Mode Guide and Tips

Tips and Tricks to win the Volleyball Mode in easy steps!

From the makers of Rocket League, Sideswipe is an action-packed car soccer mobile game. Users can challenge players from around the globe for fast-paced 2-minute car soccer games. But hang on only car soccer? How about car volleyball? Sounds crazy right? In this Rocket League Sideswipe guide, we are going to do a complete breakdown of what exactly the Volleyball mode is all about and share some valuable tips and cheats to ace in this mode.

After all the hype and fan-base it received owing to the unique concept of car-soccer, the standalone mobile game has brought us the all-new Competitive Volleyball mode in its 2nd season.  Season 2 of Rocket League Sideswipe has kicked off on the 2nd day of this month and alongside other in-game items added, the biggest addition to this season is definitely the New Volleyball Mode.

Rocket League Sideswipe Volleyball game mode

Just as it was in Season 1, there are currently 3 Game Modes in Rocket League Sideswipe. The Volleyball Mode is not a new addition, but a replacement to the previous basketball mode (Hoops Mode) where users had to basket the ball through a hoop.

The Volleyball Mode is a 2V2 un-ranked game mode where there are no goals scored. This time there is a central net and users on either side of the net have to roll the ball in the air and make sure that it doesn’t touch the ground. Once it touches the ground, 1 point is rewarded against the side which failed to keep the ball aerial. Users need to resort to powerful shots and last-minute saves to survive in this mode. It is a Limited time In-game mode for users to enjoy as the developers at Pysonix have confirmed that they will keep recycling in new modes at the start of each season. Season 2 is expected to last for roughly 3 months.

Rocket League Sideswipe Volleyball Mode Guide: Tips and Tricks

Here are some valuable insights from our experience of playing this mode for the past two days. Follow these tips to become Grand Champions in no time.

1. Follow the Jump-Dodge indicator closely

Rocket League Sideswipe has added a new visualization tool this season to help users out in this relatively new game mode. This User Interface element is present in the form of a small dot inside the boost meter. It would tell you whether you have to do a flip or not. If the dot is green you have a flip, if it is grey you don’t have a flip, as simple as that. You could always tell this before by looking at any of the in-game buttons and checking how transparent it was but that would take your eyes off of the play.

In the Volleyball Game Mode, you cannot move your eyes away from the play even for a brief moment since the ball has to be kept aerial all the time and should not touch the ground at any point. Many may have unnoticed this dot-like indicator till now, but this is a very handy interface that has been added.

2. Enable the Single Press Air Turns Option and Jump Boost button

Another relatively new feature that has been added this season is the Single Press Air Turns feature. Activating this feature would make your car do a 180-degree flip while airborne by just a single pressing on the empty screen. This is another handy feature to use in Volleyball Mode.

To avoid the ball from touching the ground, you need to manufacture last moment flips and may not have enough time for smashing the buttons. The Single Press Air turns option can get the job done with a single press on the empty screen surface.  Freestyling has not been this easy in Season 1.

The Jump Boost Button, though added in Season 1 itself, will be of more use in the Volleyball Mode added in Season 2. Of course, one may be flexible with button presses, but the Jump Boost button facilitates fast aerial moves since it makes the car perform a jump and a boost at the same time. Since, in Volleyball mode, you have to stay aerial most of the time, the Jump Boost option would make life a lot easier since simultaneous switching of the Jump and Boost button won’t be easy.

To activate the Jump Boost Button:

  • Tap on the Settings icon from the In-Game menu screen and choose Game Settings from the menu that appears.
  • Hit the Configure button beside Control Customization in the Gameplay tab. You will find a 3rd button encircled in red along with the Jump and Boost buttons.
  • Tap on that Red button and tick the box beside enabled to enable it for in-game use. Upon enabling, the button would turn white.

To activate the Single Air Turns Option:

  • Again go to Game Settings and move to the Accessibility Tab.
  • You will find the Single Press Air Turns option there. The box beside it would be un-checked. Tick the box beside it to activate the option.

3. Play aggressively and don’t be over-reliant on your teammate

  • As they say, Attack is the best form of defense. Make sure to play aggressively and eye at scoring points since your opponent would score too. It is technically improbable that the ball would be aerial for 3 straight minutes. So play with an attacking outlook instead of just looking to block the shots from the other side and score points so that you do not be in deficit.
  • Do not look to over rely on your opponent. It is more likely that you both would be from a different tier/rank. Do take the pressure and initiative in scoring if you want to rise up the tiers. Even if your teammate belongs to a higher rank, do not leave it all on him. You cannot win games by 1v2’ing the whole game as simple as that.

4. Feather your jump-boost button for longer airtime

Most newbies tend to hold the Jump-Boost Button for almost all of their air movement. Holding it for a long time reduces the effectiveness of the button. The 2v2 Volleyball mode demands longer airtime and to prolong that you need to feather your Jump-Boost button by rapidly clicking on it instead of just holding it. It would not only give the button time to re-generate but also give you time to re-adjust your joystick in the direction of the ball so as to block it or flip it over the net.

5. Perform the Red Shot more often

In Volleyball, you need to exhibit powerful spikes for scoring points. For that, you need to resort to high-speed attack options more often. The Power Shot (Red Shot) is the best attacking option in 2v2 Volleyball mode since it is the most powerful of all shots in Sideswipe.

However, only a powerful shot won’t help. You also need to stay aerial and in close contact with the ball so as to follow up with more touches in case of a counter-shot since you cannot afford to let the ball hit the ground. Follow the Dodge-Jump Indicator to know when to do a Front Flip(Red Shot). Visit our Shots Guide to understand how to perform the Red Shot and other trick shots easily in the game.

6. Try facing backwards to the ball while going for a kick-off

This is a rather defensive move, but it works better in this game mode during kick-off rather than facing the car up-front. It would help you to stop the potential shots from the kickoff line from hitting the floor and cheekily flip the ball over the Central Net at the same time.

Make sure that you aim your joystick upwards and keep your hand on the Jump-Boost Button ready since you need to be active aerially.

7. Never let the deficit be more than 1 point

This might be unknown to many but, you can never win by a 1 Point Lead in this 2V2 Volleyball mode because for the game to stop, a team has to score a goal. For instance, if the score reads 3-4 at stoppage time, the game does not stop until the later side scores to take a 2 point lead. Hence try not to let the deficit shoot up by more than 1 point as it keeps the chances of your comeback alive.

Final Thoughts

The new 2V2 Volleyball game-mode added in Sideswipe is pretty cool and fun to play. The developers at Pysonix Studios deserve a lot of appreciation for carrying out this smooth transition of Rocket League to mobile.  The new control option and user interface added, make the in-game touch controls a lot easier and smooth and can potentially reduce the over-reliance on controllers.

The only negative of this new Volleyball Mode is the fact that players can cross over to the other side of the net with their cars. It defeats the whole purpose of volleyball if you are allowed to switch sides. But at the end of the day, it’s a fun experience and that is all you want from a mobile game.
