The award-winning retro-inspired turn-based adventure RPG, Sea of Stars, is now available on both Android and iOS for $10. Originally developed by Sabotage Studios, it is now on mobile devices thanks to Playdigious. Sea of Stars is an excellent game that you must put on a must-play game list.
The game comes along with 7 main playable characters, making the gameplay mechanics and UI much more approachable and attractive to the players. Let us now dive into a detailed Sea of Stars beginners’ guide, along with a few tips that will help amateurs build up a great team and win clashes with their characters.
How to master the combat in Sea of Stars

The gameplay is very simple and easy to understand. You control a party of 3 members. On the screen, you can freely move around with the side joystick, and when an enemy triggers a fight, or you trigger a fight. The game enters turn-based fighting mode with your party members, whom you selected before the fight. Hit combos when you have the combo meter filled up.
1. Master timed hits & blocks
Press the attack button the moment your character strikes for bonus damage, and press it on incoming attacks to reduce damage taken. Consistently nailing timing can save dozens of healing items over the course of the game.

2. Break enemy locks first
When an enemy winds up a big attack, symbols (locks) appear above them: Slash, Blunt, Sun, Moon. Hit the matching damage type to cancel or weaken the attack. Breaking all locks fully cancels the enemy’s turn.
3. Use Live Mana orbs
Normal attacks drop blue Live Mana orbs on the battlefield. You can hold up to 3 stacks, then spend them to power up your next action, great for breaking locks without spending MP.
4. Sneak up on enemies
Approaching enemies from behind triggers a sneak attack and awards a free Live Mana charge, giving you a strong opener before the enemy even acts.
Using the world as your advantage
As a beginner, focus first on exploring each area of the islands carefully rather than rushing through objectives. Many valuable items, hidden paths, and rare trinkets can be found off the main route. Getting different Gear early helps you learn elemental strengths and weaknesses while also building a flexible team.

1. HP & MP don’t auto-restore
Unlike many JRPGs, your stats don’t refill between battles or at save points. Use items and cooked meals for HP. Regain MP by landing normal attacks, so don’t blow all your MP early and then be stuck unable to act.
2. Cook meals before tough fights
Don’t hoard food like potions; always use it. Cook meals that restore both HP and MP before major battles. Food is especially valuable because it never costs MP, keeping your characters offensive.
3. Don’t grind, but explore
Sea of Stars is balanced against grinding. Areas scale well with your level, and the experience rewards in the next zone are far better. Progress naturally and focus on exploring each area thoroughly instead.
4. You can skip encounters
Enemies roam the overworld, not random encounters. If you’re low on health, you can often run past them entirely. No shame in avoiding a fight when your party is in bad shape.
Sea of Stars Tips and Tricks for Beginners
Here are the best Sea of Stars tips for beginners that will help you to do well from the start of the game:

- Prioritize melee for Valere and magic for Zale.
- Use relics to maximize your team’s advantages in the battles.
- The game does not expect or require exp farming from you, but you can if you want. Good spots are where the enemies are close to an entry/exit of the zone.
- Money is hard to come by early on. Don’t buy food items; you should be able to make just about anything you’d need from ingredients you find while walking around.
- Fish are infinitely respawnable by leaving and reentering a pond.
- Always pick MP on level up when it’s available. It makes a big difference, especially early on.
- Talk to NPC back and forth, most of them have almost useless dialogue lines, but a fair amount are saying things that matter (especially late game), and that will help you find hidden secrets.
Final Thoughts
Take your time, enjoy the world, and focus on steady progression rather than rushing to the endgame. With patience and smart planning, your team will grow into a powerful squad capable of handling anything the game throws at you. Early mistakes are normal, and every battle teaches something new about mechanics or enemy patterns.
