Story Highlights
  • SEGA Sammy confirms a new Angry Birds game is planned before March 2027.
  • Rovio acquisition reportedly underperformed financially for SEGA Sammy.
  • Angry Birds 2 updates and China launch are part of Rovio's recovery strategy.

SEGA Sammy has shared a major update regarding Rovio and the future of the Angry Birds franchise, and one detail will definitely catch fans’ attention. A brand-new Angry Birds game is planned to launch within the current fiscal year, meaning before March 2027, as reported by our sister site GamingonPhoneBiz.

This was revealed during SEGA Sammy’s FY2026/3 financial results presentation. There was also a mention where the company admitted that the Rovio acquisition has not performed as strongly as expected so far.

Still, there seems to be no slowing down when it comes to Angry Birds. SEGA Sammy now plans to restructure Rovio internally first while doubling down on areas where the franchise still shows strong long-term potential.

One positive sign mentioned was that the decline of Angry Birds 2 has seemingly stabilized. In fact, the company specifically highlighted plans for continuous updates to Angry Birds 2, alongside an upcoming launch in mainland China.

At the time of writing, too, Angry Birds 2 remains one of Rovio’s strongest live-service titles. The game is currently running its crossover collaboration with Subway Surfers, bringing themed events and content into both franchises.

Outside of Angry Birds 2, Rovio has quietly started becoming active again over the past year with multiple projects and revivals. Last month, Angry Birds Rush suddenly resurfaced in early access in Mexico, and back in March, Angry Birds Friends also expanded onto web browsers.

We also saw Rovio experimenting with different genres again. Last year, Angry Birds Match World soft-launched on iOS in Finland. So while SEGA Sammy’s financial comments sound cautious, the Angry Birds IP itself clearly still remains very active, with the next step being transmedia expansion.

SEGA Sammy is heavily betting on The Angry Birds Movie 3, scheduled to release on December 23, 2026. The company expects the film to help boost licensing revenue while also driving player engagement across live games through movie-themed events and collaborations.

As for the newly confirmed Angry Birds title itself, there are currently no details about its gameplay style or genre yet. It could honestly go in multiple directions, considering Rovio has recently explored multiple genres. But regardless of what it turns out to be, the excitement around a fresh Angry Birds release is definitely there.
