Teamfight Tactics Guide: Best Builds for the Beginners

Teamfight Tactics, the popular auto-battler made by Riot Games, released for mobile devices on March 19 this year. It is based on Riot’s MOBA League Of Legends and features champions from the MOBA. You use those champions as chess pieces on a board, but not a regular square chessboard; Teamfight Tactics has a hexagonal board where you can place units. When combat begins, these units start fighting for you, and the player whose team defeats the other team wins the round. Today we bring to you a guide, the best builds for beginners to climbing in Teamfight Tactics.

Teamfight Tactics Best Builds: An Introduction

Some builds in the game are good, while some not so much. Therefore beginners may sometimes find it difficult to choose which builds to climb. We recommend forcing builds that you find easy to play for the first few games, and then learn about other builds and learn to transition to them. But make sure that your comp is not contested. If it is, you may find it difficult to 3-star some of the core units that have to be 3-starred. This is often the easiest, but a bit unpopular, way any beginner can learn about builds. Picking a comp and getting units and items for it should be the priority. Without further ado, let’s get into the best builds for beginners to climb within Teamfight Tactics.

Carousel

Teamfight Tactics has a unique mechanic, The spinning Carousel. Here, you will pick a champion from among different champions of various classes and origins. These champions on the Carousel have items on them. These items are combined into other items that make your champions more powerful. Once you pick your champions on each Carousel, you are sent back to your board. There are 7 rounds in total, and in the 4th sub-round of each round, there is a carousel.

Items

Items are probably the most important part of Teamfight Tactics. Some team compositions are very item-dependent (Star Guardians-Sorcerers), while some can make do with whatever items you have (Cybernetics). If you want to make a champion more powerful, you should have items on him/her. These items are combinable and form stronger items. Make sure to prioritize items on the carousel, and not champions, because items are a bit more RNG than other games in Teamfight Tactics.

Teamfight Tactics Best Builds for Beginners: Star Guardians-Sorcerers

Viability

This is a very item-dependent comp, as it requires at least 4 Tears of the Goddess on your main carry champion. Because of this restriction, it is often uncontested, and viable only when you have a decent amount of tears.

Champions

ChampionsItems
Neeko Bramble Vest, Locket Of The Iron Solari, Frozen Heart
Poppy Bramble Vest (If possible)
Syndra 2x Seraph’s Embrace, and a Guardian Angel if possible
Ahri Thief’s Gloves, if you have the components for them.
Zoe No items needed
Soraka No items needed
Vel’Koz Seraph’s Embrace
Xerath (Only if you get to level 9)No items needed

These are the champions you should have at least 2-starred till level 8. Roll at levels 6 and 7 to find Neeko and Syndra to 3-star them. If you level up to level 9, add in Xerath to have 6 Star Guardian- 6 Sorcerers on the field, and a team like that is powerful.

Carousel

Always prioritize Tears on the Carousel. They are a very large part of this comp.

Early Game

When you start, pick up whatever champion you can who has the Tear, and when you start getting Zoe, 2-star her as soon as you can. Add another Sorcerer like Twisted Fate, who can hold items for Syndra. Give any tears you have to Twisted Fate, and when you get your first Syndra, sell him, and give the items to her. By the end of the early game, you should have Poppy, Ahri, Zoe, and Twisted Fate, or Syndra, if you find her early, on the board. And you should have Poppy, Ahri, and Zoe at 2-star if possible.

Mid-Game

This is where you want to find Neeko, and 3-star her and Syndra. Make sure to stay above 50 gold for as long as you can. Never roll below 30 gold, unless you have less than 30 health remaining. You should get Vel’Koz at level 7, and get him to 2-star by level 8.

Late Game

All your units should at least be 2-starred, with Syndra and Neeko at 3-star. Add Xerath as the 6th Sorcerer if you level up to 9. Make sure your Syndra and Vel’Koz have the Seraph’s Embrace item, as it will help them to cast their ultimate constantly.

Teamfight Tactics Best Builds for Beginners: Mech-Pilot Infiltrator

Viability

This was one of the most played comps at the beginning of Set 3. It has been adjusted a few times since, but it is still a very strong comp to climb with. You don’t have to have many units, and it requires just one 4-cost and one 5-cost unit. These days, it is also uncontested because once a player starts hoarding Mech-Pilots, another player can find it very, very difficult to run that comp. So, if you start hoarding the champions for this right from the start, you’ll have no competition for the units.

Champions

Champions Items
Annie Guardian Angel, Ionic Spark, Quicksilver
Rumble No items needed
FizzNo items needed
Shaco Guardian Angel, Blood Thirster. Infinity Edge
Kaisa Rabadon’s Deathcap, Morellonomicon, Seraph’s Embrace
Kha’zix (Early game)/ Ekko (Late game)Kha’Zix holds the Morellonomicon for Ekko
Kayle Guinsoo’s Rageblade

Carousel

B.F Sword > Chain Vest > Needlessly Large Rod > Negatron Cloak> Brawler’s Gloves: This should be the order in which you should prioritize items on the carousel. Always pick any B.F Sword, Chain Vest, and Rod you can get your hands on.

Early Game

Start hoarding all Annies, Rumbles, and Kha’Zixs you can find. It’s better to play a Vanguard comp early game, and give Shaco’s items to Jayce. An ideal early game comp would be Mordekaiser, Jayce, and Leona, with Kha’Zix. Once you find Kaisa, add her and remove Leona. By the end of the early game (Krugs), you should have Annie, Rumble, Kaisa, Kha’Zix on the board, with at least Kha’Zix at 2-star. You will also likely find Shaco towards the end of early rounds, so add him in to get 3 Infiltrators on board.

Mid Game

At levels 6 and 7, roll for a 3-star Kaisa, Annie, and Shaco, and find Fizz to complete the Mech synergy. Also, once you level up to 7, you can add Kayle, and complete the Valkyrie synergy with Kaisa. At this point, your comp will be – Annie, Rumble, Fizz, Shaco, Kaisa, Kayle, and Kha’Zix or Ekko, if you find Ekko early. Keep rolling down to 30 gold till you get your 3-stars, and then, build your economy back up to 50 and start leveling to level 8 to find Ekko, if you didn’t find him at level 7 (At this point if you have less than 30 health, it is recommended to roll below 30 gold to find your 3-stars quickly, so they can become more powerful and win rounds for you, saving your HP).

Late Game

Once you get all the important units to 3-stars and find Ekko, sell Kha’Zix, put in Ekko, go back up to 50 gold, and roll for 2-star Ekko. If you have an extra Morellonomicon, after giving one to Kaisa, slam it on Ekko. A 2-star Ekko with a Morellonomicon can give your comp a big power spike. With a 3-star Annie, Kaisa and Shaco, and a 2-star Ekko, you can become capable of taking down other teams fairly fast.

Teamfight Tactics Best Builds for Beginners: Space Jam (Space Pirate-Celestials)

Viability

Space Pirate-Celestials became a meta comp about a week or two ago, so it’s a recently made comp. For this one to succeed, you have to, and we emphasize, you have to, have Darius and Jayce, the two most important champions in the team – at 3 stars. Having those two at 3 stars is what will help you win the game.

Champions

ChampionsItems
Darius Rabadon’s Deathcap, Quicksilver
JayceJeweled Gauntlet, Hextech Gunblade, Ionic Spark
Kassadin No items needed
Xin ZhaoDragon’s Claw if you can get it after giving items to Jayce and Darius.
RakanNo items needed
AsheSpear Of Shojin, if you can get it.
Jhin (Only if you level up to 7)Runaan’s Hurricane if possible

Carousel

Gloves > Rod > Everything else. Both of the said components are very important.

Early Game

Buy Graves and Darius the moment you see them in the shop. They will grant you the Space Pirate bonus, which can grant you extra gold each round. Once you find Jayce, replace Graves with him. Your two main carries will now be on the board. Along with them, an ideal early game comp would include either Vanguards with Jayce, or Blasters with Graves if you can’t find Jayce early. So, there can be two variations in the early game –

  • With Jayce and Darius – Jayce, Darius, Mordekaiser/Poppy, Rakan, Xin Zhao.
  • Without Jayce – Darius, Graves, Ezreal/Lucian, Rakan, Xin Zhao.

Mid Game

You should level to 6 on either Round 3-4 or 3-5, before the Murk Wolves round at 3-7. At this point, you can roll aggressively to get your core build – Jayce, Darius, Kassadin, Rakan, Xin Zhao, and Ashe – on the board. It’s ok to drop below 50 gold if you get all your units to 2 stars. But try to not go below 30. After that, go back up to 50, and slow-roll (Don’t go below 50 gold) to get your units to 3 stars. You should get Jayce and Darius to 3 stars, and if you can, get Kassadin, Rakan and Xin Zhao to 3 stars too, because they will provide extra strength to the team, and enable your carries to do more work.

Late Game

After finding multiple 3 stars, you can go to level 7. Once there, you can add Jhin to the comp to get the Sniper bonus with Ashe. If you have extra items after stacking Jayce and Darius, give them out to other units. Going to level 8 is not necessary, instead, try to slow-roll to get any of your remaining units to 3 stars if you can. Going 4 Space Pirates is not useful, so we recommend to not do that.

Teamfight Tactics Best Builds for Beginners: Brawler-Blasters

Viability

Brawler-Blasters is one of the best comps in the game at the moment. But due to its recent rise in the meta, you may have to compete with, and out-roll and out-level others who may be looking to build them.

Items

ChampionsItems
Blitzcrank No items needed
Malphite No items needed
Cho’Gath Morellonomicon, Zephyr
Vi Ionic Spark
Graves No items needed
Ezreal No items needed
Jinx Guardian Angel, Giant Slayer, another offensive item (Giant Slayer or Red Buff)
Lucian (Early game), Miss Fortune (Late Game)Lucian – Red Buff, Miss Fortune – Rabadon’s Deathcap
Aurelion Sol Jeweled Gauntlet (Recommended, but not needed)

Carousel

Giant Belt > Chain Vest > B.F Sword > Gloves > Tears: Belts and Vests are very important for this comp, so try to get them as soon as you can to slam them on temporary champions while you get your main comp online.

Early Game

If you get a Belt or Vest early on, combine them on Lucian to give him Red Buff. Lucian with a Red Buff is ridiculously powerful in the early rounds. Don’t roll here, and concentrate on leveling up. Your ideal early game comp should be – Graves, Malphite, Blitzcank, Lucian, and any other unit that synergizes with the said ones on the board. If you can’t get Malphite or Blitzcrank, however, your early game should be Cybernetics – Leona, Fiora, Lucian, and Graves – 3 Cyber – 2 Blaster.

Mid Game

This is where you will level more and more till you reach level 7. Once you get to 7, roll for Vi, Cho’Gath, and Jinx. After you find Jinx, sell Lucian and give his Red Buff to Jinx. Try to all the units to 2 stars, and roll for getting Jinx to 3 stars. Do not leave items on the bench, and distribute them to those who will use them best. Then, level up to 8.

Late Game

Level 8 is where you will find your 4th BlasterMiss Fortune. This is also where you roll aggressively to get Jinx to 3 stars. Give Miss Fortune a Rabadon’s Deathcap, and get all the upgrades for her from the shop whenever they show up in there. Start leveling up to 9. Keep your gold above 40, and pick up Miss Fortunes on the way to get her to 2 stars.

Level 9

After getting to level 9, roll your gold to find Aurelion Sol. He will give you the Rebel bonus along with Malphite and Jinx. When you get him, try to roll down all the way to zero to get him to 2 stars. Give him a Jeweled Gauntlet if you can. At level 9, your comp will be – The 4 Brawlers – Vi, Cho’Gath, Malphite and Blitzcrank, and the 4 BlastersGraves, Jinx, Ezreal, and Miss Fortune, and Aurelion Sol. If you build this comp with the best items, it is incredibly powerful and can beat the top tier comps in the game. Building this will almost always guarantee you a top 4 spot. In addition to that, it is one of the most beginner-friendly comps and can also work with whatever items you have.

Teamfight Tactics Best Builds for Beginners – 6 Dark Stars

Viability

One of the main units of this build – Shaco, was recently nerfed, but when you get this build fully on the board, it can be destructive. At the level the beginners play, this is not contested much, so it is easy to get the units you need. The most important thing about this build, though, is that you don’t have to have any of your units at 3 stars, and all the units can be solid even at 2 stars. That’s right; this build does not require any 3-star units to be strong. This makes it one of the best comps any beginner can play.

Champions

ChampionsItems
Jarvan IVNo items needed
MordekaiserNo items needed
Lux No items needed
Shaco (Early and Mid Game), Xerath (Late Game, if you get him)Shaco – Guardian Angel, Blood Thirster/ Xerath – Guinsoo’s Rageblade.
Jhin Trap Claw, Runaan’s Hurricane, Quicksilver
Karma No items needed

Carousel

Go for B.F Swords and Chain Vests on the Carousel as they’ll be helpful in forming Guardian Angels and other items for your carries.

Early Game

An ideal early game for Dark Stars would be any two stars you can find, along with Jarvan and Mordekaiser. Once you get Shaco, put him on, and if you can get Kha’Zix, put him on too, to get the 3 Dark Star and 2 Infiltrator bonus. Lux can also be found in the early game, so level up to 5 and add Lux to the team to get 4 Dark Stars. Give only attack items you have to Shaco, preferably a Blood Thirster and an Infinity Edge, and for defense, give him a Guardian Angel. At the end of the early game stage, your board should ideally be – Jarvan, Moredekaiser, Shaco, Kha’Zix, Lux/Any other two stars if you can’t find Lux.

Mid Game

The mid-game for Dark Stars is all about 2-starring your Dark Star units, and leveling to level 7 to find Jhin, and also get Ashe on board. Jhin will add to your Dark Star bonus, while Ashe will give you the Sniper synergy with Jhin. Give Jhin a Trap Claw so that he does not get hooked by Blitzcrank, and for the attack, slam a Runaan’s Hurricane on him. If it is possible, give your Ashe a Spear of Shojin so that she casts her ultimate ability frequently. Also, add Karma to complete the 6 Dark Star synergy, and place her next to Jhin so she can shield him. Your board at level 7 should look like this – Jarvan, Mordekaiser, Shaco, Lux, Karma, Jhin, and Ashe. It is also very important to get all of your units to 2 stars before the late game.

Late Game

Your 6 Dark Stars will carry you through most of the late game when they are 2-starred. After you get them all to 2 stars, level up to 8, and add Lulu to the board. Lulu will give you the Celestial bonus with Ashe, and the Mystic bonus with Karma. Her ultimate, “Polymorph” is also very powerful, as it renders the enemy units useless and unable to fight. Now, if you think Shaco is not that good, because of his nerfs, you can also look to get Xerath at level 8. When you get him, place him on the board and sell Shaco, giving Shaco’s items to him. After the changes, your final comp will look like this –

  • With Shaco – Jarvan, Mordekaiser, Lux, Shaco, Karma, Jhin, Ashe, and Lulu.
  • Without Shaco – Jarvan, Mordekaiser, Lux, Xerath, Karma, Jhin, Ashe, and Lulu.

When this comp comes online, and the units are 2-starred, along with the items you give them, it can be really strong, and easily get you top 4.
