Genshin Impact: The Origins of the Fatui Harbingers Explained

Looking deep into the lore of the Fatui Harbingers!

Genshin Impact is slowly but surely meeting its climax of the whole plotline in the main story, as we are halfway done with the Regions and Archon Quests. As such, there are still many answers to be unravelled about the grand scheme of the Tsaritsa and her Harbingers. The Fatui Harbingers play more into the role than just some one-dimensional villainy as each member has a certain edge to them in Genshin Impact. With the release of Version 3.5 Update, we have introduced a compilation and thorough analysis of each member of the Fatui Harbingers in Genshin Impact.

Genshin Impact: Complete Lore of the Fatui Harbingers

Pierro “The Jester”: Leader of the Fatui Harbingers

Pierro’s background is shrouded in mystery but is hinted at in the Mocking Mask Circlet of the Pale Flame Set. He is the leader of the Fatui Harbingers and has recruited half of the members of the current Harbingers today. Pierro is of Khaenri’ah origin as indicated by his star-shaped pupil and his outfit. He used to be a royal mage of Khaenri’ah but failed to gain favour with the ruler and could not prevent a catastrophic event that destroyed the nation.

As a result, he turned bitter towards the “divine” and joined the Tsaritsa’s cause. Pierro recruited Il Dottore and Signora to join the Fatui Harbingers, offering them Cryo Delusions to suppress their elemental powers in Genshin Impact. He was also involved in the Tatarasuna Mystery, where Dottore infiltrated the Mikage Furnace to sabotage the nation at Pierro’s behest. Pierro recruited Scaramouche to the Fatui, who later became an important member of the group.

During the Unreconciled Stars event, Pierro sent Scaramouche to Liyue, leading to a discovery that upset him. Pierro orchestrated the Fatui’s involvement in Inazuma, including dispatching Nathan to infiltrate the Watatsumi Army, having Scaramouche oversee the Delusion Factory, and having Signora manipulate the Kanjou Commission.

II Capitano “The Captain”: First of the Fatui Harbingers

There is little information about Capitanoor, The Captain. He is confirmed to be Number 1 of the Fatui Harbingers of Genshin Impact in Tartaglia’s and Wanderer’s voice lines. Additionally, we have gotten a lot more information about him in the Limited Event “Of Ballads and Brews” in Version 3.1. It is revealed that Varka, who is the Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius, has come into contact with Capitano and the Fatui while he and his men were on the expedition. They are on neutral terms as of now with Varka revealing that he will be heading to Natlan soon. This confirms that we will be encountering The Captain when we reach Natlan. Lastly, Capitano is confirmed to be the strongest human on the continent.

As for Capitano’s personality, he seems to be the nicest or the most agreeable person to work under, with how many Fatui NPCs spoke out about how they would like to be stationed and work under The Captain instead of the Harbinger they are assigned to.

II Dottore “The Doctor”: Second of the Fatui Harbingers

The Doctor has been a very well-established character in Genshin Impact before the release of the game. He was first shown in the Genshin Impact Webtoon where we get to witness Dottore being the typical mad scientist experimenting on children and other beings for pure knowledge purposes. Back then there was a limited amount of information on his character but with the release of Sumeru, we got more lore on his journey to being where he is now, along with Scaramouche/Wanderer.

Dottore or Zandik, was born in Sumeru and has always had a sick sense of fascination with enhancing human capabilities. He was enrolled in the Akademia but despite being a genius with such high intelligence, he was promptly kicked out of the Akademia due to his psychotic behaviour and disregard for the rules and treatment of his peers.

Dottore is quite a mystery, he is born human yet he lives on for hundreds of years. Dottore even has made different segments of himself in different ages or stages of his life to preserve his knowledge and bring different perspectives of himself to the table. Unfortunately, his Segments are said to be all destroyed as per Nahida’s request.

Columbina “Damselette”: Third of the Fatui Harbingers

Despite the calm and relaxed appearance, Columbina gives off during the teaser, it is unsettling to see her be third in the ranks of the Harbingers. As of now both Tartaglia and Wanderer (Scaramouche) have talked of her being a scary and unnerving individual to the point that they warn the traveler to stay away from her.

There is little to no information regarding Columbina as of now in Version 3.5, yet there is very popular speculation surfacing around the fan community about her origins. Columbina’s appearance and clothing give us a hint as to where her origins tie in. Simply put, her headband with her face covered has motifs similar to that of the Seelie Court. This leads us to believe that Columbina may be a Seelie who has now joined the Fatui, although her intentions are currently unknown why. To summarize the lore regarding Seelies, they were once a vast race that held high intelligence and wisdom guiding humankind with knowledge. As of now, the Seelies lost their powers, having their civilization fall into the Dark Sea.

Arlecchino “The Knave”: Fourth of the Fatui Harbingers

The Knave is rumoured to be the 4th of the Fatui Harbingers in Genshin Impact. She is known for running the House of the Hearth, which is a kind of Orphanage that raises child soldiers. She raises them to be future Fatui members. However, it is unclear whether she is involved in other Fatui activities involving former members of the House of the Hearth. Arlecchino seems to have a negative impression of both Tartaglia and Scaramouche/Wanderer. Tartaglia expresses his dislike for her, stating that she lacks loyalty towards the Tsaritsa and would betray her if it benefited her. Wanderer also has a negative view of her, describing her as obsessed with power and having a dark side that causes those who see it to disappear without a trace.

Arlecchino has been mentioned in some of the World Quests that occur in the game. Arlecchino deployed some of her agents to Inazuma, and one of them decided to take advantage of Signora’s death to build Arlecchino’s “prestige” to repay her kindness. To that end, he ordered Lyudochka to infiltrate the Shuumatsuban and, after she stalled on her mission upon realizing the Traveler and Paimon’s involvement, changed his plans to sabotage peace talks between the Shogun‘s Army and the Watatsumi Army by poisoning Watatsumi‘s water supply.

However, Efim did not inform Arlecchino of this operation and was recalled to Snezhnaya before the operation could be carried out, allowing the Traveler to cut Lyudochka free from the Fatui. Arlecchino also deployed some agents to Sumeru to unearth the Eternal Oasis, along with helping an NPC find a “live subject” in the desert.

Pulcinella “The Rooster”: Fifth of the Fatui Harbingers

The Rooster or Pulcinella is the 5th and was revealed first in the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: Travail but his appearance seem to catch many people by surprise when his face reveals is different from the trailer. Pulcinella is discovered to be the Mayor of Snezhnaya, although, we do not know what town, in particular, he is the mayor of.

The voice lines regarding Pulcinella seem to be conflicting about his true personality and attitude. He shows compassion to Tartaglia’s family, but Wanderer’s voice line suggests that his intentions seem to be sinister and manipulative. As of now, there is little information regarding Pulcinella and we have to wait for future patches to get more lore.

Scaramouche “The Balladeer”: Sixth of the Fatui Harbingers

Scaramouche now goes by the name Wanderer and has already been a pretty well-established character currently in the game. We have talked about his lore and character story in-depth in this article. The former Scaramouche is now an ex-Fatui Harbinger, cutting all ties and removing his whole existence with the titles ‘The Balladeer’ and ‘Kabukimono’ from the Irminsul. As a result, he has no semblance of ties with the Harbingers. Wanderer was brought into the Fatui by II Dottore and has been experimented on by the very Doctor. With a new-found sense of vengeance for him, it is clear that it is not the end of Wanderer/Scaramouche’s journey and his relationship with the Fatuis. The Interlude Archon Quest makes it very much prevalent that he will be back and his story is far from being over.

Vengeance aside, Scaramouche/Wanderer is essentially a puppet and is speculated to be made from the same technology as the ones used in Khaenri’ah. This ties back to Raiden Ei’s knowledge of puppetry and how she made both the Shogun and Wanderer.

Sandrone “Marionnette”: Seventh of the Fatui Harbingers

Sandrone is the 7th of the Fatui Harbingers and was first shone in the Lazzo Trailer in Genshin Impact. There is little to no information regarding Sandrome as of now. The little information we have about her is that she makes automation and is skilled in puppet-making techniques that are hailed from Khaenri’ah. She seems to rely on her machines and judging by both Tartaglia’s and Scaramouche/Wanderer’s voice lines she seems to have an angry and uptight personality, never letting anybody touch her machines. There is widespread speculation that Sandrome is responsible for making Katheryne, the very own Adventurer’s Guild guide due to the similarities of character designs.

La Signora “The Fair Lady”: Eighth of the Fatui Harbingers

La Signora was the 8th of the Fatui Harbingers and was a concurrent antagonist through the Archon Quests. Before her Fatui life, she was a human maiden named Rosalyne-Kruzchka Lohefalter who lived in Mondstadt roughly around 500 years ago and fell in love with a man named Rostam. Shortly after, she enrolled on Sumeru’s Akademia and parted ways with her lover Rostam. After the Cataclysm struck, she returned to Mondstadt from Sumeru only to discover that Rostam died. Filled with the rage of loss for her lover, she became the infamous ‘Crimson Witch of Flames’ and began killing monsters and demons, abandoning her mortal life.

Pierro promised her vengeance and justice for her lover and offered her to join the Fatui. She promptly accepted and became a Harbinger in no time. The events afterwards are self-explanatory, if you recall the Archon quest storylines. Unfortunately, in the Inazuma storyline, she died due to losing a duel against the Traveler. Raiden Shogun executed her and we see her disintegrating to ashes.

Pantalone “Regrator”: Ninth of the Fatui Harbingers

Pantalone is someone who was revealed to be born in poverty despite being one of the wealthiest people amongst the Harbingers. He is in charge of the Fatui’s finances and manages Snezhnaya’s economic policies. He is also close friends with Dottore, although it’s unclear if he’s on good terms with the other Harbingers. There’s speculation that Pantalone may very well be from Liyue. Additionally, we got more information regarding him from Yelan’s Character Story and her Story Quest.

Pantalone’s ideal world is to have Snezhnaya be the heart that produces money all over Teyvat. Even though he hasn’t officially debuted in the main storyline yet, Pantalone has influenced many of the story points as a background character for the Fatuis.

Tartaglia “Childe”: Eleventh of the Fatui Harbinger

Tartaglia is the last person to join the Fatui and is allegedly the youngest Harbinger in the Fatui. He is one of the few who hails from Snezhnaya originally. We can get a lot of information about him via his Character Story and voice lines about how he lived to be the position and character that he presents himself as. Tartaglia is one of the few characters that was sent to the Abyss and has learned most of his fighting stance and style from his Master, Shirk.

Despite his cheerful and laidback exterior, Tartaglia has a passion for fighting and shedding blood. It is unknown whether he has adapted this type of attitude and personality while being stuck in the Abyss for some time or not, but his ties to his Master may play something important in the future story, particularly with the Abyss Order.
