Asian Games 2022: Krafton’s country manager discusses possibilities on how BGMI players can participate

This will be a huge achievement for the Indian esports community

The upcoming Asian Games in 2022 will feature esports as an independent sports category and will be the first international event to do so in the world, but for certain countries, PUBG Mobile is known as BGMI which is sadly not included for now. Each country will have its own teams who will compete in the 8 mentioned games for the event of which the popular title PUBG Mobile is one.

The controversy behind PUBG and its ban affected certain coutries

PUBG Mobile as an entity has been under a ban in India since 2020, and recently a few months back the game was relaunched in India under a new title and entity called Battlegrounds Mobile India or BGMI. Even though BGMI is fundamentally the same game as PUBG Mobile, it has separate privacy rules and a separate server that is isolated from the rest of the world. And all this while the main global version of PUBG Mobile is banned.

India might get a shot at Asian Games 2022 with BGMI

Yesterday, Aneesh Aravind, the country manager of Krafton in India, came forward to speak about the matter at India Today Conclave in a panel discussion. When he was asked about the possibility of Indian BGMI players participating in the Asian Games 2022 as representatives of PUBG Mobile for India, he said that the matter is still under scrutiny and discussion.

According to him the Olympic Committee and Asian Games Federation are in talks to figure out a way to finalize a format for the game to be conducted. The Krafton board in India is partaking in the talks to figure out a way to select and send players to participate in the Games to represent India.

Will we see BGMI in the 19th Asian Games

Even though the matter might seem a bit complicated at first it shouldn’t be a tough job to resolve the issue and finalize a roster for India. For example, like India, China also has a strict ban against PUBG Mobile and their people are offered Game For Peace, a version of PUBG Mobile exclusive to China just like BGMI to India.

Despite being an isolated server, the Chinese teams and players still compete in global tournaments and have done so since 2018. Thus, if China can do that we can hope that India can as well in the coming future.
