Stadia, Google’s cloud gaming service is again on news headlines. After a report published on Bloomberg, it has been reported that Google has paid $20m for Ubisoft ports for Assassin’s Creed and The Division. Not only Ubisoft but it also paid tens of millions of dollars to Take-Two for Red Dead Redemption 2 and NBA 2K. This showed that much Google was pouring into securing third-party content contradicting its plan of disrupting the gaming industry with original content.Â
Google’s pursuits with Stadia
Google had launched Stadia in back November 2019, where it was advertised to be capable of streaming video games to players up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with support for high-dynamic-range via the company’s numerous data centers. In the press conferences, it was said that Google would be hiring game developers to compete with the likes of PlayStation, GeForce, Luna, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. But, they were dismissed before they could’ve started, as Google shut down in-house game development.

Delving deep into the matter, Jason Schreier, the report’s author further mentions that Google had paid tens of millions of dollars for each port. It’s just like they have decided to run a marathon before even learning to walk from Day 0. The latest report follows the recent news that Google closed Stadia Games and Entertainment, the studio responsible for making in-house development, though the company mentioned that it will try to find new roles for those game developers. It was also said that Stadia will continue to operate with third-party games.
Last week, a lawsuit was also filed against Google, Bungie, and id Software over the unfulfilled promises made for Stadia. Overall, it could be said that Stadia turned out to be one of Google’s ill-planned projects. That resulted in disappointment for the entire gaming community as they were expecting more exclusive titles from Google.
