Google Play is letting you try paid games for free before buying them and play them across mobile and PC

Freemium experience!

Story Highlights
  • Game Trials now allow players to experience the full version of select paid games for free for up to one hour.
  • The "Buy Once, Play Anywhere" model enables a single purchase to work across both mobile and PC via Play Games.

Okay, this is pretty exciting. Google Play is making some interesting moves for players who enjoy paid games, and from what I’m seeing, the new features could make discovering and playing premium titles a lot more convenient.

Premium games can be tried and tested for an hour on Mobile and PC

During the GDC Festival of Gaming, Google announced a set of updates that allow players to try, buy, and play paid games more easily across devices. The goal is to make premium games easier to explore without worrying about extra costs.

So, what makes the above possible is the addition of Game Trials. This feature lets you play the full version of select paid games for free for up to one hour. Instead of relying on trailers or reviews, you can actually jump into the game and experience it yourself.

If you like what you play, you can purchase the game and continue right where you left off, since your progress carries over after buying. From what Google shared, Game Trials will start rolling out to select paid games on mobile first, with plans to bring the feature to Google Play Games on PC later as well.

Another change that stood out is the “Buy Once, Play Anywhere” pricing model, which is live now at the time of writing.

Normally, if you want to play a game on both your phone and your PC, you often have to buy two separate versions. Google is trying to remove that barrier by letting you purchase a game once and play it on both mobile and PC through Google Play Games.

Some games already supporting this system include Reigns, OTTTD, and Dungeon Clawler, and more titles are expected to follow. This means if you start playing on your phone, you can simply switch to your PC later and continue your progress seamlessly, as long as you’re using the same Google account.

A push for players to try more paid games on the Google Play Store

While everything till now has been about improving the premium experience, there’s a lot more to delve into with the community aspects. A feature called Community Posts is now available in English, where it is a place inside Google Play where you can ask questions, share strategies, and discuss gameplay tips.

On top of that, Google’s Play Games Sidekick overlay is expanding to select paid titles. This in-game helper provides AI-generated tips and curated gameplay information, so if you’re stuck on something mid-game, you can get guidance without leaving the game.

When you view it as a whole, I really like how this push for premium gaming experiences is turning out to be. Paid games are indeed an offering that many players should get their hands on, and with this feature, I’m sure there will be many who’ll at least try multiple games and become potential consumers.

Free-to-play games still dominate mobile gaming, but these updates are totally what is needed to make paid games feel more approachable. Being able to try a game before buying it and play it across devices with one purchase removes two of the biggest friction points players usually face.
