Tencent Games and Huawei, two of China’s major players in the gaming industry, are now embroiled in an unannounced conflict that has intensified their ongoing dispute. Recent reports indicate that nearly all of mobile games from Tencent have vanished from Huawei App Store rankings.
NetEase Games have now occupied the top charts in the Huawei App Store, snubbing Tencent out of the list
According to a report by SCMP, almost all of Tencent’s mobile games have disappeared from Huawei’s app store rankings. The situation has escalated further as the top spots in Huawei’s app store are now occupied by titles from their rival, another Chinese video game giant, NetEase Games with its three titles namely Eggy Party, Identity V, and Fantasy Westward Journey.
Remember when Tencent removed the popular action–RPG Dungeon and Fighter Mobile from several Android app stores including Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo owing to a licensing dispute last month? That was the beginning of the rivalry between Huawei and Tencent, although this seems to be a valid reason.
A leading mobile manufacturer, Huawei holds a 43 percent share of the domestic smartphone market and is a significant player in game distribution in China. This isn’t the first instance of a dispute between the two companies: in 2021, Huawei briefly removed several Tencent games from its app store. However, following negotiations, the games were reinstated shortly after.
Well, if you ask me, this is brewing to be another Apple vs Epic scenario. I still don’t think there will be any legal battles to follow since other Tencent titles are still accessible through searches on Huawei’s app store, but you never know. Here’s hoping there isn’t any friction anymore between the two, since they don’t wanna miss out on their respective markets by leaving out each other.
