We’ve been seeing more cross-platform mobile games lately, and even though mobile technology isn’t as powerful as PCs or consoles although it can still play some power games, it has been seen as a great formula for developers to bank on. Super Evil Megacorp CEO Kristian Segerstrale echoed this sentiment, as he mentioned the importance of Cross-Platform for growth in the Games Industry.
In the opening keynote of Develop:Brighton, a conference, expo, and networking event for video game developers, Kristian spoke to mobilegamer.biz about various topics, ranging from his views on the current state of the games business to cross-platform development and more.
Segerstrale thinks developers should go for a cross-platform title if they are creating a great experience
Kristian Segerstrale believes that single-platform games will become rare, with cross-platform becoming the norm for mid-core and core genres.
According to him, this approach allows players to enjoy games regardless of their device, maximizes the potential market, and improves returns on marketing and development investments. Acknowledging the challenge of creating a great game, he sees no reason not to make the title cross-platform if you create one.
He added this experience in the process when he took on the CEO role in 2018, as they went through a reset and brought on new leadership. He continues: “Instead of focusing on a moonshot single title, we decided to build a multi-title company pursuing genre mastery for cross-platform co-op action games”, aimed to advance their technology, talent, and expertise in the industry.
Super Evil Megacorp’s engine has helped the team deliver fluid performances across every platform
Segerstrale detailed their approach to developing cross-platform games, stating that they design all their games with cross-platform compatibility in mind from the beginning. They rigorously test controls, camera, and character interactions across various input methods such as physical controllers, virtual joysticks, and mouse and keyboard, early in development to ensure seamless cross-play.
He also speaks about the role their engine Evil plays in helping their cause of giving importance to Cross-Platform games, which allows them to deliver high-quality visuals on high-end devices while maintaining fluid performance on lower-end mobiles, while “gracefully degrading the graphics”.
Super Evil Megacorp themselves have great cross-platform experiences, with a recent one being the co-op roguelike adventure game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate, which is based on the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise that saw its debut in the Apple Arcade platform this May.
Before concluding, Segerstrale commented on Web3 and the metaverse. For the former, he comments that has yet to see a game that excites him and mentioned that Super Evil Megacorp is not exploring this area. Regarding the metaverse, Segerstrale noted that the idea seems fleeting and expressed skepticism, but remained open to the possibility, reflecting on the unpredictable nature of gaming innovation.
