India PM Narendra Modi calls youth to lead gaming, urges developers to create games to attract audiences worldwide

India's untapped potential!

In a recent speech, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the potential of the country’s youth to take the lead in the gaming industry. With the global gaming market growing rapidly, the Indian PM emphasized that India can play a much larger role as a creator of games and lead the gaming world.

India’s rich heritage can be a base for attractive games and nurturing new talents, says PM

Addressing the gathering during India’s 78th Independence Day celebrations on August 15th, 2024, PM Modi highlighted India’s untapped potential in the gaming industry, noting that most of the creation and production of games are from other countries, which means that current revenue that comes from this market goes to companies overseas.

The Prime Minister noted that India has a rich heritage, which can serve as a foundation for nurturing new talent in the gaming industry. He expressed confidence that games developed in the country have the potential to attract children and players from around the world, embracing the stories of India and its culture.

He called on developers to use their creativity and skills to design games that resonate with Indian players and appeal to international audiences. He added: “I want India’s children, youth, IT professionals, and AI professionals to lead the gaming world, not just in playing games but in having our products reach every corner of the globe.”

Not only gaming, but he also mentions India’s potential in animation as well. He said that animators in India have the potential to work globally, making a big difference in the world of animation, and urged the country to move in that direction.

PM Modi has shown strong interest in revolutionizing gaming in India

PM Modi has long been a strong advocate for the Indian gaming industry and has repeatedly shared his vision to transform the country’s gaming landscape. Back in April 2024, while trying his hands on a few games, he met with some of India’s top gaming creators to discuss his vision for the future.

Meanwhile, Indian Game Developers are also making a mark on global audiences with their creations as well as discussing policies to speed up the growth. In July 2024, the Indian video games industry came together to request changes for online game categorization, including proposed ideas such as Market Access and GST Rationalisation.

By embracing India’s rich cultural heritage and tapping into the country’s technological talent, India has the potential to craft engaging and compelling stories through gaming. This approach could significantly enhance India’s role in the global gaming market, with the industry currently valued at $942 million in 2024 and projected to grow to $1.6 billion by 2029.
