PUBG Mobile or BGMI might allow players to have more than 4 members in a battle royale match

Is a 5 man battle royale coming to PUBG?

In the most recent community update by the PUBG Mobile or BGMI team on the official game website, we have been brought up to date with the “dev talk” which is basically a discussion among the game developers regarding features and revamps which can appear in the game in the near future. One of the subjects involved suggested the addition of a classic battle royale mode in PUBG Mobile but with more players than the current 4 member format.

Revamping the battle royale with more than 4 players might not be so easy

As we all know, since the inception of the original game on the PC platform, PUBG has always maintained its traditional 4 man squad format. Solo and duo exist but they don’t fall in the squad category. Therefore, the decision to implement such a decision in PUBG Mobile will certainly be a wager with chances being that it will either succeed or fall flat on its face.

The reasons could be that the players are way too familiar with the current format and everything has been built around the 4 man format. There are also the in-game factors and maps which come into play.

Not all of the maps might be compatible with more than 4-member squads

Maps like Sanhok which is 4×4, or Livik which is 2×2 are extremely clustered and optimized for 4 man squads, and increasing it to 5 or more can become a messy affair. Not much breathing space, small drop locations, constant skirmishes which come with a small map will come into play.

Even if we remove the likelihood of the smaller maps getting the new mode, the big maps Erangel and Miramar will be problematic too. One such problem is the difficulty in rotations. There are no cars with 4+ seats except the bus in Miramar, which is not viable due to the randomized spawn.

Players might become too spread out and get caught out by the enemies while being the odd one out and traveling alone. Split play just isn’t as viable in classics as in competitive. Gunfights will also tend to become messier as coordinated fighting becomes more difficult and can result in disastrous outcomes.

The idea might face backlash from the players upon full implementation

Given the cons, there just aren’t that many pros to the decision except for the obvious addition of one more friend to the team. We have to remember that there is a reason why all BR games have 4 man squads as the standard format. It offers just the right balance between teamwork, coordinated gunfights, and viability. And players have been content with it up until now and there are no real demands to change it either.

Though it sounds exciting at first, having more than 4 players in a team isn’t really the way to go. But again, these are all hypothetical as we haven’t seen the feature being implemented in the game yet. And who knows, maybe if the developers play their cards right it can be another hit decision and take the game up a notch. Till then, waiting is the only thing we can do and hope it turns out for the best.
