Renovation and construction elements are the new meta for mobile casual games, reports GameRefinery

These elements are the key to success!

A very interesting report by GameRefinery that goes into detail about some of the new trends in casual gaming has revealed some key information about meta elements that are helping mobile casual game developers propel their games into top charts. Renovation and Construction elements, in particular, seem to have played quite a major role in the success of quite a lot of games. Project Makeover and Royal Match, the top-grossing mobile casual games, have these elements too.

The report brought up a few important points:

  1. All US top-100 grossing iOS games utilize renovation elements from the last two years.
  2. Renovation and construction features are some of the most popular meta elements. Construction elements appear in 49% of the US top-100 grossing iOS Match 3 games, compared to 7% six years ago.
  3. Social features and building communities are becoming more popular in traditionally single-player genres. The best performing Match 3 titles have started increasing competitive elements in their games, resulting in a higher appeal to competitive motivated players.

These points make the message quite clear. Casual titles with renovation and construction elements are doing quite well and enhancing the gameplay experience for players in a way that seems to propel the games into popularity.

The reason for Construction and Renovation games being a hit among players

The reason behind this is the sense of satisfaction that players get as they complete builds and visually see their progress in construction and renovation games. Game developers have taken note of this fact, too, as the report pointed out how renovation and construction elements are showing up in games where you wouldn’t expect them to, like in Phase 10, a card game, and Best Friends, a puzzle-based adventure game. They’re also quite easily monetizable and don’t have to directly tie into the core gameplay to be appealing to players.

This isn’t anything new, though. Clash of Clans featured base building and is still going strong years later. The report goes in deeper into more elements. However, the focus was on renovation and construction, which contribute to the success of games and are a hit among players while also bringing in money for those working on the games.
