Stadia introduces ‘Direct Touch’ controls on Android Devices

Exciting times ahead for Stadia users!

Stadia allows players on mobile to connect controllers or a keyboard and mouse to play their favorite games, that was the case until now. However, according to a recent report by 9to5Google, Stadia for mobile will release a touchscreen controller. This new incredible feature will be out in Stadia for Android devices with the release of Humankind on the 17th of August 2021. iOS is expected to get the direct touch controls later.

With this touch controller, Stadia will calculate players’ finger presses and send the response back to their cloud server. Using the touchscreen, input latency will be more noticeable than controllers. It will be fascinating to see how good the direct touch controller will be, as any delay will be critical for touchscreen accuracy.

To try this touchscreen controller, download Humankind on a tablet or an android phone. Make sure that there is no controller connected, Stadia will then ask to switch for direct touch controls. Each game that allows direct touch, will have touch controls of its own. With Humankind, one, two and three-finger tap, hold and Drag will be the only controls.

  • One Finger Tap: Tap with one finger to select
  • Two Finger Tap: Tap with two fingers to cancel
  • Three Finger Tap: Tap with three fingers to toggle the pause menu
  • Hold: Hold with one finger to preview
  • Drag: Drag with one finger to move

This is a great game to start the Direct Touch controls with, interacting with friends and getting the most amazing strategy game experience on Stadia. This is just the start as more games in future will allow Direct Touch controls. It will be interesting to see how future Stadia titles will evolve with Direct Touch. Though till now, Direct Touch is available only on Android Devices, iOS will join later.
