The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is a free-to-play mobile game being developed by Electronic Arts. The company announced on Monday that the collectible RPG is the publisher’s next big licensed product for mobile devices. It will launch a limited, regional beta test, commencing this Summer of 2022.
Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of the Saul Zaentz Company, has held the exclusive worldwide rights to the motion pictures, merchandising, stage, and other rights in certain literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, since the 1970s. EA is reportedly developing the game under that license. EA Capital Games, based in Sacramento, California, was also the development company behind Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, a hugely popular mobile collectible RPG that debuted in November 2015.
Expectations are high from EA’s first mobile game on the Lord of the Rings franchise
Immersive storytelling, turn-based combat, extensive collection systems, and a diverse cast of characters from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit universes will all be featured in The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth. Players will battle through legendary storylines from Tolkien’s realm and join the fight against Middle-great earth’s villains.
Electronic Arts have a long history with the Tolkien universe, having developed PC and console games based on the novels and films of The Lord of the Rings. Capital Games consists of a professional team of mobile RPG experts. It is EA’s first mobile game inspired by storylines, locations, characters, and lore from The Lord of the Rings.
Company executives are highly optimistic about the title
“We are thrilled to be working with EA once again, this time to bring a mobile game solely inspired by Middle-earth as described in the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien to its fans,” said Fredrica Drotos, Chief Brand and Licensing Officer for SZC’s Middle-earth Enterprises. “It’s an honor to work with the talented Capital Games team whose knowledge and love of the lore is palpable throughout.”
