A big blow to the mobile gaming industry as veteran site TouchArcade announced its shut down after 16 years of game coverage. The announcement was made via a post by Jared Nelson, the Editor in Chief at TouchArcade.
As TouchArcade bids goodbye, occasional posts or special features will aim to keep the site active
As of September 16th, 2024, the normal daily activities have ceased on the site, though there may be a few additional posts to honor prior commitments as confirmed in the official post.
The main reason for the site’s closure is financial problems, which have affected it for many years. It’s even called a “miracle” that they managed to stay open for as long as they did. Despite efforts to avoid intrusive advertising and ethically questionable sponsorships, the team admitted that the website just couldn’t make enough money to stay afloat in today’s online environment.
Since its inception in 2008, TouchArcade has contributed over 33,000 published articles and 4,000 game reviews, while its Game of the Year section was also a popular go-to reference. With that being said, the site’s content will remain available for reference purposes.
On the brighter side, the TouchArcade Show podcast will continue. The team plans to shift Patreon support toward maintaining the podcast, with occasional posts on the site. Ideas like occasional “SwitchArcade” posts, high-profile mobile game reviews, or a Game of the Year feature are discussed to keep TouchArcade alive in a smaller form.

Author’s Note
As a mobile game enthusiast and journalist, I’m truly disappointed by this news. Having followed the industry closely for years, it’s heartbreaking to see such an exceptional site like TouchArcade shut down. I genuinely wish them all the best for their future plans on behalf of GamingonPhone and hope they can still contribute to the handheld gaming community in any way they can, even if it’s in a more passive role.
