The card-collecting RPG Harry Potter Magic Awakened will officially close its server operations in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29, 2024, the makers have announced. The game has already been removed from the App Store and Google Play as of August 26, 2024, so new downloads are no longer possible.
Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will still be in operation in Asia and the MENA regions
Harry Potter: Magic Awakened was one of four games announced during NetEase Games’ Annual Product Launch back in 2020. After its launch in China in September 2021, the game opened global pre-registrations in February 2022. After a delay in the release process, the game entered early access in select regions in April last year before its global launch on 27th June 2023.
Just after completing a year of its release, the close of operations announcement has hit Harry Potter: Magic Awakened. Well, the reason for this “select regions” shutdown surely has to be in line with the business in those regions, as the game must have not collected enough or as expected. Mind you, the game had a lackluster $3.1 million in revenue and 3.5 million downloads in the first three weeks of global release, of which 50% of the revenue had come from the US.
The closure only affects players in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. The game will still be available for players in Asia, including the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and other select territories in Asia the Middle East, and North Africa, whose publishing is handled by NetEase. So if you are from these regions, you can continue downloading and playing.
As mentioned earlier, the shutdown of servers will happen on the 29th of October in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania so if you are in these regions, you will no longer be able to access the game after this date. At the same time, new content updates will stop with the current season, Intercontinental Wizard Cup, which will end on September 17, 2024.
Being a fan of this title since I was invested in the Harry Potter franchise since I was a kid, this news is a disappointment. Without any doubt, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened had so much potential, but it felt like it was never managed correctly as it deserved from the start. Here’s hoping a worthy replacement comes along in the future in the HP franchise.
