Apart from content creation and co-development for other studios, Valkyrie created its PvP base-building strategy game, Guns Up! which was first released on Windows and Playstation in 2015. The game is currently available in select regions as a part of a soft launch for mobile platforms and is said to release globally in early 2022.

Not the first time Valkyrie Entertainment will be working with PlayStation Studios

Valkyrie has tied up with Sony multiple times with the latter helping Valkyrie by publishing Guns Up! while the former is engaged in assisting Santa Monica for the development of the upcoming God of War title Ragnarok.

In a press release, Hermen Hulst said “Valkyrie Entertainment is a highly adaptable and respected studio which has produced high-quality work on a range of platforms from console to PC; and a variety of styles from action to games-as-a-service titles,”.  He further added, “Valkyrie’s diverse capabilities will be welcomed by every team at PlayStation Studios as we continue to focus on delivering extraordinary gaming experiences.”

Game Studio Acquisition has been a standard procedure for Sony

Acquiring game studios is an industry-standard procedure and the US-based developer is Sony’s fifth direct acquisition in 2021. This year has seen Housemarque, Nixxes Software, Firesprite, Bluepoint Games being added to Playstation Studios, and with the latest addition total number of first-party companies under the Playstation Studios has grown to 17.

The acquisition is a part of Sony’s vision to strengthen its Console output and also grow its IP into the mobile and PC landscape. Chief Financial Officer of Sony Group, Hiroki Totoki revealed earlier this year that the company plans to aggressively invest in its development capabilities, and with the increased development resources it wants to focus on deploying games to PC and mobile devices.
