Tarisland Review: Experience a Classic Medieval MMORPG

In Tarisland, the action MMORPG by Tencent Games, you are transported to a classic medieval setting within a captivating Western fantasy realm. The game offers a vast sandbox experience with diverse classes and challenging raids that evolve as you progress. In this Tarisland review, I’ll share my experiences, insights, and overall verdict on the game’s content and quality.

While writing this review, I used an iPhone 11 and also tried it out on PC to play Tarisland and accumulated nearly 40 hours of gameplay. Additionally, I played the game briefly during its beta phase. This allowed me to thoroughly explore all its features and provide a comprehensive analysis of the game.

The game’s storyline fits the theme but brings minor errors

Tarisland’s storyline is better than expected. It’s simple to follow and has likable characters with good voice acting and decent writing. The fantasy plot is familiar, but the pacing is nice with short and frequent cut scenes that fit well into the game. The characters are easy to recognize by their speech, and even though their animations are basic, they still manage to convey the story effectively.

However, there are some issues. The translation isn’t great, and technical problems like dialogue cutting off and overlapping speech make it hard to follow at times. Sometimes dialogue options get cut off, leaving you unsure of your choices. Despite these problems, the storyline is still enjoyable and keeps you engaged, but it needs fixes to be truly great.

Tarisland gameplay fails to bring a unique aspect to the game

If you’ve played Tarisland, you’ll know that the gameplay doesn’t bring any unique aspects to the table. At its core, Tarisland offers nothing new to the genre. It sticks to the basics: dailies, weeklies, dungeons, raids, infinite climbing towers, PVP, questing, puzzles, exploration, and achievements. The game includes everything, yet the system fails to adequately explain its features. Even after playing for countless hours over several days, I still couldn’t figure out what many of the terms meant.

The game includes nine classes with two talent trees each, allowing for role flexibility. It features a vast world with four maps for exploration, a daily capped leveling system to help players catch up, and crafting and economy systems. PvP modes are also available, including battlegrounds, arenas, and large-scale battles with rewards and rankings.

In essence, Tarisland is not a replacement for major MMORPGs like World of Warcraft. Instead, it caters to a more casual playstyle, encouraging short, intermittent play sessions without a long-term commitment. This is evident from the game’s design, which feels more suited for mobile devices than PCs. A notable drawback is the lack of diversity in class gameplay. Each class has a similar set of skills, reducing the need for strategic thinking and making combat feel repetitive and simplistic.

The game brings classic graphics but with a less impacting audio

Tarisland brings good classic graphics that bring its fantasy world to life. The environments are beautifully detailed, featuring lush forests, intricate cities, and grand structures like the World Tree in Misty Forest. The game’s aesthetic is highly reminiscent of popular MMORPGs, which adds to its visual appeal.

Character designs are also well-executed, with distinct appearances and expressive animations that enhance the storytelling experience. However, some players have noted that while the visuals are stunning, they can sometimes feel a bit too similar to other games in the genre, lacking a unique artistic identity​.

The audio in Tarisland complements its graphics, featuring pleasant voice acting that brings characters to life and a well-crafted soundtrack that enhances the immersive experience. The background music is engaging, fitting well with the various environments and scenarios in the game.

On the downside, there are technical issues such as bugged dialogue and overlapping voices, which can disrupt the gameplay experience. These problems are common in many games, but they are particularly noticeable here, impacting the otherwise enjoyable narrative flow​.

Tarisland Controls favors mobile over PC players and the UI is well-made

From my experience, Tarisland is particularly user-friendly on mobile devices. The controls are intuitive and responsive, making the gameplay feel smoother compared to playing on a PC. This ease of use enhances the overall gaming experience, especially for those accustomed to mobile gaming. But for hardcore players that would prefer playing on PC for longer hours, it would take time for them to get used to the difference in comfortability compared to mobile.

The user interface (UI) in Tarisland is exceptionally well-designed. It’s clean, organized, and highly customizable, allowing players to adjust target frames and other UI elements to their liking. Built-in damage and healing charts provide valuable insights during gameplay. Additionally, the game benefits from stable servers, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted gaming experience.

In-game monetization can gradually disrupt the game’s F2P feature

As far as I know, Tarisland used to pride itself on being a F2P game where players needed to grind to progress, rather than relying heavily on monetization or pay-to-win advantages. Recently, however, they’ve started introducing ways for players to boost their accounts with less grinding through monetization.

This shift could potentially change the game’s balance and how players experience it, raising questions about fairness and the game’s original goal. While some players might appreciate the option to speed up their progress, others might feel that the game is becoming pay-to-win, which could lead to frustration and dissatisfaction. Tarisland needs to find a balance between generating revenue and maintaining a fair, enjoyable experience for all players to keep its community engaged and loyal.

Final Verdict

In my experience with Tarisland, the game didn’t quite meet my expectations and has several issues that need addressing. However, it does serve well as a casual game for players looking to jump in and out. It shines particularly in its social aspects, offering opportunities for trading and collaborative gameplay.

Despite its shortcomings, Tarisland’s expansive world and diverse classes provide a decent gaming experience, especially for those who enjoy MMORPGs on mobile devices. It remains a viable option for players seeking a lighter, less demanding gaming experience with occasional technical hiccups and room for improvement in gameplay depth and narrative coherence.
