COD Mobile World Championship 2021 – Garena Finals came to an end yesterday. Singaporean team ALMGHTY was crowned the champion of the esports event. Besides, the team secured its place in the upcoming World Championship. They picked up a clean sweep of 3-1 against the runner-up DG Esports. Blacklist International secured third place. Sponsored by Sony, the event is organized by Activision.
COD Mobile World Championship 2021 – Garena Finals: ALMGHTYs’ road to victory
The event featured two stages of play. Twelve teams were divided into two groups of six each played the group stage. Being the runner-up of Group A, the champion team advanced to the next stage, the playoffs. The playoffs stage featured single-elimination play in a best-of-five format where ALMGHTY took down M42 Esports in the quarters and Group B champion WDC.FREESLOT in the semis. The results of both matches were 3-0.
On the other hand, DG Esports defeated Omega Esports by 3-1 in the quarter. After a cutthroat match in the semi, they managed to win against Blacklist International by 3-2, thus advancing to the final. The expected start was not seen by fans as DG Esports lost the first 2 rounds in Summit and Raid. Winning the third round, they tried to come back but lost the fourth one again. So, the best-of-five match stopped after conducting the fourth, making ALMGHTY the champion.
Final thoughts
Before the regional qualifier took place, the top two teams from the six countries that are under this region, gathered for this online event. The event is a qualifier tournament for Southeast Asia to seed teams to the CODM World Championship 2021. Started on 7 October, the event closed yesterday, October 17.
Formed last March, the team has shown their potential already. As the sole representative of Southeast Asia, the expectations are high from the fans. It will be interesting to watch how the team performs on the global stage.
