Buriram claims the AIC 2021 title!

After becoming the runners-up in the 2019 AIC final, Buriram United Esports did not repeat the same thing. They have now become the International Champions for Arena of Valor, showing aspects of true Esports professionalism. Beating the mighty V Gaming by 4-3 in a breathtaking intense final, Buriram United Esports has been crowned as the champions of Arena of Valor International Championship (AIC) 2021.

The final was arguably one of the most intense finals ever seen in the AIC 2021. From getting down to the lower bracket followed by beating the perfect record holders of the group stage V Gaming, this year’s story was a fairytale for Buriram.

From RoV Pro League 2020 winners to AIC winners 2021

Despite playing in the final of AIC 2019, Buriram was beaten by Team Flash in a dominating fashion, with a score of 4-1. But, they came back strong in the RoV Pro League 2020 Summer to claim the winner’s title. They had qualified for AIC 2021 from the Thailand region in the Road to AIC and started well in the group stage. 

They qualified for the knockout stage, being the 3rd position team from Group A. Buriram was beaten by the other finalist V Gaming, who was unbeatable on the group stage. But in the knockout stage, Buriram United Esports was beaten by Saigon Phantom with a score of 2-3. Dropping down to the lower bracket, they have faced Valencia CF eSports, which they beat comfortably.

Post that game, they beat ONE team, in the form of Group B champions 4-0. Following the massive success, their next opponent was the fan-favorite dtac Talon. They also crumbled 4-2 before Buriram. In the lower bracket final, it was a tough fight for Buriram, where they managed to slip away 4-3 against Hong Kong Attitude.

V Gaming was the only unbeaten side in the AIC, who defeated every other team rather easily. Whereas, the journey for Buriram was not smooth. They pulled off a few matches from the edge to be in the final. In the final, Buriram started with a whopping victory against V Gaming. But after that, things started to go dark for them as they lost 3 consecutive matches against V Gaming. V Gaming arguably dominated almost every match of the final, but the rock-hard holding gameplay from Buriram United kept them in it. Being 1-3 down, they completely turned it around, by beating V Gaming 4-3. It was 3-3 on level terms, until the decisive match and it saw V Gaming was rolling for the win. But Buriram did hold their nerves and kept the focus, defeating the unbeaten team.

F1 and Nunu have been their top players throughout the tournament. F1 was the highest MVP title winner in the Group Stage. Nunu, who had been the best mid throughout the tournament, was named the MVP of the final. 

Final Thoughts

The Arena of Valor International Championship 2021 was the fifth world championship under the AIC franchise. Organized by Garena and Tencent, the prize pool was increased from last year from $500,000 to $1,000,000. Buriram United Esports secured their first-ever AIC title win this year, grabbing $400,000 for themselves. They will be looking forward to keeping up their consistent winning ways as the World Cup is knocking at the door.
