PUBG Mobile: Possibilities and consequences of the new franchise based esports system

Change is good… but for how long?

PUBG Mobile has announced its esports roadmap not many days ago, which details the new esports system that the game will henceforth follow. Ahead of the game’s 2022 esports year, it has shared a lot of new things regarding its journey for this year and after. James Yang, Director of PUBG Mobile Global Esports unveiled a lot of plans and the game is calling it PUBG Mobile Esports 2.0, a whole new level in the ecosystem of the game.

So, PUBG Mobile has finally taken its next step, which is the preparation for upcoming events and their blueprints. The 2022 roadmap includes less PMCO and PMPL, third-party leagues, a bigger prize pool, among others.

PUBG Mobile Esports 2.0: The outcomes it will bring

From 2018 to 2021, PUBGM’s first phase has been completed. In the first phase, the game has introduced 7 new Pro Leagues in 2021, to cover the global regions started PMGC in 2021, and also added some changes in the regional calculation. Now, after the new format has been introduced, it looks like the game is focusing on country-based leagues more as a broader role has been given to the national championships aka the PMNC, making it the highest event for semi-pro and amateur level.

With so many qualified and invited teams in each country, it’ll cause traffic of teams on the road to PMGC while it has open some possibilities at the same time. Teams can now fight for their country in the Asian Games and the SEA Games for a medal. Besides, there’s an open chance for all to climb as much as a team can.

PUBG Mobile new esports system: A bigger prize pool to be introduced

Here are a few points of view that we have to consider. First, esports is mostly nothing but pure entertainment from the spectators’ perspective. The teams that try to participate in those are driven by many things, like representing their countries, earning a name under the games’ flag, and of course, earning from it. While the organizations and the sponsors that are working behind a team are driven almost solely by money. So, this is a crucial part of any event that how “much” it is providing a team.

Increasing the number of the prize pool amount will surely work as a booster for the teams to fight all in while more organizations and sponsors will come forward to back a team-up.

Franchise-based league in SEA: What are the consequences

James Yang said that the game is going to implement a franchise-based league for SEA. “We’ll start a franchise model in the second half of 2022, first in Southeast Asia. Our franchise model will be different from other existing models”, said Yang. The details are not revealed yet, but the hints directed that the leagues will be “lighter” and “open for all”. It will help underdogs to come out in front.

But it’s unclear how root-level teams will climb. In other words, the format of the ladder is unknown. Yang said that PUBG Mobile will work for the root level i.e. the semi-pros, and the amateurs to give it a strong base. Because, without one good base, the outcome won’t be good. And, when it will be 2023, the system will get a more mature form.

In these leagues, a franchise can be PUBGM’s official partner and will get good financial returns. Though the tag “third-party” will be there, the events are going to be recognized globally. Furthermore, as per the plan of 2022, teams won’t have to wait for PMCO to qualify in PMPL. Rather, they can do so by playing PMNC or even other major third-party events.

Looking at the global stage, franchised leagues are not something newly arrived as China and Japan already introduced them. Peacekeeper Elite League (PEL) and the PUBG Mobile Japan League (PMJL) are two of the biggest events outside PUBG Mobile’s esports format. After all, this is certainly a big brain move by PUBG Mobile.
