FPL 2021/22 Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit Guide: Best players for the double gameweek

Players who can bring some extra FPL points for the next gameweek

For the past few weeks, Premier League football has been plagued with COVID outbreaks. Many clubs have been forced to postpone games due to the sheer number of infections in both players and staff. As a result, the wonderful sensation of following a Premier League matchday has been missing. Fortunately, it seems that a return to the norm could well be on the horizon. The PL Association has been working hard under the hood to reschedule all those postponements in the coming matchdays. Therefore, there is an opportunity for FPL managers to use their chip resources, and hence we brought you the FPL Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit Guide to push your rank ahead of common managers.

This is especially good news for the Fantasy Premier League fans, who deserve some excitement after the blank game-week horror shows. We’ve already seen a mini-double game-week just recently in Double Gameweek 21, and the fixtures for the Double Gameweek 22 have already been announced. The Official FPL board has also done their part to add an extra incentive to play the game in these tough times, after distributing an extra Free Hit chip for all FPL managers. With 8 clubs looking ahead at a double gameweek, it seems like a decent opportunity to activate one if you haven’t already.

In this article, we will analyze the top players to have this game-week, and the best squad of players to build on a Free Hit.

Is it worth using the Free Hit in Double Gameweek 22

One of the major questions this game-week aside from which players to pick is if it is even worth activating a Free Hit. Whilst there are a decent 8 teams with a double, some aren’t particularly exciting, and with the exciting ones, the options to choose from are heavily restricted. In addition, there could very well be the possibility that a single game-week player outscores a double game-week player. For example, Trent Alexander-Arnold against Brentford has the ability to outscore a Watford defender, despite the latter facing Newcastle and Burnley in the double.

So is it worth playing the chip? Even though there are 2 available, there is still the possibility of both coming in handy sometime later this season. If you have activated one of them already, it’s best to hold on to the second. Ideally, about 4/5 of the strong double game-week picks is alright, and if this is achievable through free transfers, that is the better way to go. If this is not achievable, then you may want to consider activating the first Free Hit of the season.

FPL Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit Team: Goalkeepers

Robert Sanchez (4.5m)

Robert Sanchez has been a strong budget pick this season, returning a total of 65 FPL points since the start of the season. His 8 clean sheets are the 4th most of all other keepers, and he has made the joint most saves in the last 5 game-weeks (17). The Spaniard’s cut-price of 4.5 million allows more room for improvement in other areas of the team. As the 2nd goalkeeper will likely not be needed, any of the 3.9 options are fine, such as Scott Carson.

Alternatives:

  • David De Gea (5.2 million)
    • Manchester United‘s poor defensive performances recently mean a clean sheet is very unlikely. However DDG’s save points make him one of the better options this week.
  • Hugo Lloris (5.4 million)
    • Although the Spurs defence has been impressive under Conte, their double game-week fixtures are against Arsenal and Leicester. Both have been scoring well this season, ranking 5th and 6th for the most goals respectively.
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga (4.7 million)
    • With Mendy out to AFCON, Kepa looks set to start for the Blues. Despite the tough competition coupled with Chelsea’s recent sloppy defending, they still have the ability to work at a clean sheet in one of the 2 fixtures. Kepa’s low ownership makes him a very strong differential.

FPL Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit Team: Defenders

1. Emerson Royal (5.0m)

Emerson Royal has been a common starter under Antonio Conte in the new tactical formation. He’s been quite in-form as well, having totaled an average of 7 points per week in the last 3 fixtures. The Brazilian is a cheaper pick as opposed to his wing-back partner Sergio Reguilon, but both have similar attacking threats. It is advised to have at least one of them in Free Hit squads.

2. Trent Alexander-Arnold (8.4m)

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been one of the best players this season so far and is a vital asset to FPL teams. A home game against Brentford sounds too good to be true and so he is a must-have despite being a single game-week player. Although not exactly suited to Chelsea’s football, Marcus Alonso looks set to start at wing-back. He’s the most attacking name from the available Chelsea defenders and has been on better form recently in fairness as well.

3. Tariq Lamptey (4.5m)

Tariq Lamptey has annoyingly had his minutes managed in the last few games, but it’s likely that he starts in the next game against Palace. As an attacking defender priced at 4.5 million, Lamptey acts as a decent budget enabler, with the only real risk being whether he gets time on the pitch or not. He will make the bench for this Free Hit team, as will Burnley full-back, Matthew Lowton. The Clarets have been far from flashy this term, but Lowton is a double game-week legend that is difficult to pass on. Those who played FPL last season will remember his wild 17 point haul in a double game-week last season.

Alternatives:

  • Sergio Reguilon (5.4 million)
    • Similar to Emerson Royal, except safer (in terms of FPL ownership) and more expensive
  • Marc Cucurella (5.1 million)
    • Upgrade to Lamptey – more expensive but also more nailed and reliable this season
  • Luke Thomas (4.3 million)
    • Has played the full 90 for the last 6 games and is also quite attacking for Leicester too.

FPL Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit Team: Midfielders

1. James Maddison (6.9m)

James Maddison has been on fantastic form lately, with 4 double-digit hauls in the last 6 games, including two 16-pointers. It would be a tough decision to leave him out this week especially on a Free Hit. With Liverpool missing both Salah and Mane, Diogo Jota will be one of the key focal points in the Liverpool attack for this game-week. A home game against Brentford is a great opportunity for Jota to score points, despite only being a single gameweek.

2. Lucas Moura (6.5m)

With Son ruled out until around February time, Lucas Moura looks like a certain starter now, as he was one of the rotated names whilst Son was still available. His 17 point haul in GW19 remains the highlight of the season so far, and the Brazilian is expected to build on that tally in the coming double gameweek. Jarrod Bowen is another single game-week player who still has a great home fixture against Leeds. He is one of the options who are most likely to outscore most double game-week midfielders too.

3. Leandro Trossard (6.1m)

Leandro Trossard completes the midfield and will be the one on the bench for this Free Hit team. He is a key asset from the Brighton attack and is a decent double game-week option to fall back on if needed. A cheap enabler such as Brownhill is also alright, but if the funds are available, a 6m attacker adds some useful squad depth to the team.

Alternatives:

  • Ademola Lookman (6.0 million)
    • Leicester are short on attackers so it’s likely Lookman starts. He’s a cheap pick, and offers good attacking threat as an alternative to Maddison
  • Youri Tielemans (6.4 million)
    • Another Maddison alternative, who is much more explosive with 3 double digit hauls this season
    • Could also be on penalties if Vardy isn’t fit
  • Mason Mount (7.7 million)
    • Chelsea’s attack is often rotated, but Mount is one of the likely starters, with a strong record already

FPL Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit Team: Forwards

This Free Hit team goes heavy at the front with two expensive attackers in Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

1. Harry Kane (12.2m)

Harry Kane had a painfully slow start but seems to have finally found his feet with 3 goals in the last 4 games. In addition, his personal record against double game-week opponents, Arsenal, has always been strong too.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo (12.5m)

Cristiano Ronaldo has been a very interesting FPL option so far, with weirdly placed blanks and hauls. However, there are 2 opportunities against Villa and Brentford here, so it’s difficult to leave out one of the most reputable players in the league here.

3. Emmanuel Dennis (6.1m)

Emmanuel Dennis has been surprisingly dangerous this season and has somehow found himself as the second-highest scoring forward in the game. On top of that, Watford’s fixtures for this double are arguably the best out of them all, and so any Watford player is pretty much a must-have.

Alternatives:

  • Joshua King (5.8 million)
    • The differential alternative to Dennis, who is now also cheaper by a bit too. It’s worth noting that King has been pushed wide with Dennis down the middle recently, which usually impacts goal scoring chances.
  • Michail Antonio (7.8 million)
    • The home game against Leeds is a great opportunity for points, despite being a single game-week
  • Romelu Lukaku (11.5 million)
    • The 3rd premium forward that isn’t nailed enough to make it over Kane/Ronaldo – only for the bravest!
  • Chris Wood (6.7 million)/Neal Maupay (6.5 million)
    • Both are mid-priced forwards with strong influence over the team whenever they play

FPL Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit Guide: Tips and Tricks

1. Using all of the budget is not necessary

Whilst it may be tempting to spend all the money available, sometimes this may lead to unnecessary upgrades, where the cheaper option outperforms the expensive options. Aim to target players based on their ability rather than their price.

2. Keep atleast three single game-week players

Since the fixtures are not really enticing for this double gameweek, many players won’t use the Free Hit. Therefore, going all-in on double game-week players whilst leaving out Liverpool and West Ham assets, for example, could be damaging.

3. Don’t forget Liverpool

Liverpool has a very good fixture at home against Brentford, and so it is highly advised to pick up at least 2 of their assets. Jota and Alexander-Arnold are the most obvious picks, which could be crucial this week, despite being single game-week players.

4. Aim for one of Bowen or Antonio

West Ham’s home game against Leeds is another very good opportunity to score points, even though West Ham area single game-week team. It is advised to try and incorporate either of Antonio and Bowen as they are the 2 most effective West Ham attackers right now.
