Clash Royale, with its December 2025 update, brought one of the biggest additions the game has seen in years: Hero Cards. These new units act like upgraded versions of classic troops, each with a unique ability and a nice and strong gameplay twist.
Since they don’t unlock like normal cards, players might be wondering: How do you actually get Heroes? Here’s a quick guide that breaks down how Heroes work and the exact steps to unlock them.
Steps to Unlock Heroes in Clash Royale
Heroes are enhanced versions of regular troops with new visuals and their own ability button, similar to Champions but more explosive. They take the same deck slot as Champions, so you’ll choose between them when building your deck.

From Hero Coins
Collect Hero Coins, which are the new name for what was previously called Hero Fragments. Once you collect 200 Hero Coins, you can unlock any Hero of your choice from the Magic Items tab under the Heroes section.
If you are Arena 5 or higher, you would receive 200 Hero Coins for free when the Mid-March 2026 update went live, allowing you to unlock one Hero instantly.
From Pass Royale
The easiest way to get Hero cards in Clash Royale is via the Pass Royale. The premium side of the Pass gets you the card for a specific Hero in a jiffy. You can also collect up to 75 Hero Coins every season by progressing through the pass.
Saving Hero Coins
Another major change introduced in the update is that new Heroes can now be unlocked immediately when they are released. As long as you have 200 Hero Coins saved, you can unlock the newly released Hero right away.
From Bonus Coins from Duplicate Heroes
If you obtain a duplicate Hero after already owning all available Heroes, the game converts that duplicate into extra Hero Coins, giving you additional progress toward unlocking future Heroes.
