Apple CEO Tim Cook praises Honor of Kings as a ‘global phenomenon’ in China visit

The visit coincides with iPhone 15's drop in sales

In the midst of reports indicating a decline in iPhone 15 sales, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook made an unanticipated visit to China and has heaped praises on the popular action MOBA title Honor of Kings, mentioning it to be a ‘global phenomenon’.

Honor of Kings is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) developed by TiMi Studios and published by Tencent Games for iOS and Android mobile platforms in the Chinese market, which was released in 2015. It became a standout title in the genre, making history as the first mobile game to surpass $10 billion in revenue a couple of years back.

This impromptu trip from Tim Cook to China coincided with a decrease in iPhone 15 sales in the Chinese market, which is partly due to the introduction of homegrown Huawei’s new Mate 60 Pro. Certain estimates indicated a substantial double-digit decrease when compared to the prior iPhone 14 series.

During his visit, Cook even participated in an Honor of Kings contest hosted at Apple’s Taikoo Li store in Chengdu. Sharing his thoughts on the Chinese microblogging service Weibo, he wrote: The action-packed Honor of Kings started here in Chengdu and is now a global phenomenon on the App Store. Thank you TiMi Studio Group and all the talented gamers who were competing at Apple Taikoo Li Chengdu. The energy tonight was off the charts!”

However, this isn’t the first time that Tim Cook made a visit to China and expressed a positive thought on a game. In April, the Apple CEO met with the HoYoverse team in Shanghai, where he had a meeting with the creators of Genshin Impact. This meeting also reflected Apple’s efforts to strengthen ties with partners in Shanghai and other major mainland markets.
