- Overwatch Rush is officially announced, putting an end to long running rumours.
- This is not a port, a completely standalone game.
- The development is in its very early days; testing to begin soon.
Blizzard Entertainment has officially confirmed the development of Overwatch Rush, a new title that marks the franchise’s first dedicated expansion into the mobile gaming market. Breaking away from the traditional first-person perspective of its predecessor, Overwatch Rush is a top-down hero shooter built from the ground up specifically for touchscreens, and is now ready for testing.
We reported exactly 4 years ago that an Overwatch mobile might be in development. This was followed by another update about the development in October 2024. And last year in April, we also reported on the regional publishing deals of this title.
For veterans like me who have over 1000 hours combined in Overwatch, Paladins and Marvel Rivals, the announcement raises a critical question: Can Blizzard translate the high-octane, ability-driven gameplay of Overwatch into a new perspective without losing the franchise’s soul? Well, only time will tell.
This is not a port, but a standalone version
Unlike League of Legends: Wild Rift, which mimics its PC counterpart’s layout, Overwatch Rush is a standalone title with vertical, top-down experience. By moving away from the first-person perspective, Blizzard avoids the cluttered UI issues that plague mobile FPS titles.

While many expected a direct mobile port of the PC/Console experience, Blizzard is instead opting for a “mobile-first” architecture. And I personally think this is a very good way to cater to the mobile games market.
The project is being handled by a separate team within Blizzard with deep mobile expertise. Crucially, Team 4 (the core Overwatch developers) remains fully focused on the PC and console live service, ensuring that the two titles do not compete for development resources.
How to play Overwatch Rush and when it will release
Though Overwatch Rush is in its “early days,” Blizzard is already preparing for regional testing. The studio has launched an official Discord server to bridge the gap between developers and the player base during these early phases.
“Our mission is to continue to expand the Overwatch universe by bringing fresh new adventures to players across all platforms,” the team stated.
So, for now, we can not assume any release date since the development phase is very early. But I am hoping that the release timeline will be very clear later this year. We can possibly expect a release in 2027, unless they delay it like Wild Rift.
